CIT PREVIEW: Cardinals set to host the 72nd Annual Concordia Invitational Tournament

(Ann Arbor, MI) - The Concordia Invitational Tournament (CIT) is returning to Ann Arbor this weekend, January 24-25 for the 72nd edition. Ann Arbor will welcome Concordia Chicago, Nebraska, and Wisconsin to the Cardinal Fieldhouse this weekend.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

ANN ARBOR

The Cardinals are led by Elyse Schlump who is in the middle of her third season at the helm of Ann Arbor's women's basketball program. CUAA currently has a 8-10 record on the year, with a 7-5 conference record. 

 

Ann Arbor has been averaging 66.4 points per game this season while allowing 65.4 points per game defensively. The tandem of senior guard Abby Long and freshman center Lauren Borsenik have both averaged double digit points per game with 14.4 and 14.3 respectively. Long leads the team with 4.7 assists per game while Borsenik brings down 6.9 rebounds per game. 

 

The Cardinals fell in their opening game against Nebraska last season, before defeating Chicago in the consolation game. Ann Arbor last won the women's tournament in 2013, and have won it two times since joining in 2003.

 

WISCONSIN

Wisconsin is led by Stacey Brunner-Jones, who is in her 21st season with the Falcons. CUW is 6-9 on the season thus far and is 6-2 in conference play. 

 

The Falcons average 56.2 points per game while allowing opponents 58.1 points per game. Senior forward Aubrey DeBauch paces the Falcons with 15.0 points per game, followed by Ava Booth with 9.7. DeBauch pulls down a team-leading 7.4 rebounds per game, while Andrea Butterbrodt is second with 6.1. 

 

The Falcons won their initial game over Chicago in last year's CIT, before falling to Nebraska by 30 points in the championship game. Wisconsin's last CIT championship in the women's side was in 2007, and was one of the three they have won all-time.

 

CHICAGO

Lauren Martin leads the Cougars in her 7th season as the Head Coach. Chicago is 1-14 on the season and 0-8 in conference play. 

 

The Cougars average 48.3 points per game this season while allowing 70.9. Khaliah Reid and Mikalah Ellis both average double figures in points this season with 15.4 and 10.1 respectively. Alisyn MacGregor is the leader this season in rebounds at 8.2 per game. 

 

The Cougars dropped both games last season at the tournament as they fell to Wisconsin and Ann Arbor. They have won four previous CIT's with their last coming in 1986.

 

NEBRASKA

The Bulldogs are headed by Drew Olson who is in his 19th season as Head Coach. Nebraska has a record of 9-10 on the season and 6-9 in their conference play. 

 

On the offensive side of the ball, Nebraska averages 75.7 points per game while allowing only 65.7. The Bulldogs have a balanced offensive attack as they are headed by Kendal Brigham and Kristin Vieselmeyer who score 11.5 and 10.5 points per game. Raelyn Kelty leads the team in the rebounding department as she averages 6.3 rebounds a game. 

 

The Bulldogs earned their 32nd CIT title last season with wins over Ann Arbor and Wisconsin. They have won the previous 9 tournaments.

 


MEN'S BASKETBALL

ANN ARBOR

The Cardinals are led by Head Coach Ricky Yahn who is in his 12th season as the coach for CUAA. Ann Arbor is 5-13 on the year and 2-10 in conference play. 

 

The Cardinals are averaging 67.6 points per game this season while allowing opponents to score 77.4 a game. They are led in scoring by Ray Washington-Battle at 15.3 per game and Jack Olis with 11.5 a game. Mark DeVries leads the team as he averages 5.8 rebounds per game while Olis and Washington-Battle both average 5.2.

 

Ann Arbor dropped both games at last year's CIT as they fell to Nebraska and Chicago. The Cardinals last tournament championship came in 2018, which was their fourth since joining in 2003.

 

WISCONSIN

Wisconsin is led by Head Coach Shawn Cassidy who is in his 17th season leading the program. The Falcons are 8-8 this season and hold a 6-5 conference record.

 

The Falcons average 77.6 points per game this season offensively while outscoring their opponents by a margin of 1.8. The offense is led by duo Casey Verhagen and Logan Landers who score 19.4 and 17.3 per game. Landers leads the rebound efforts for the team with 8.3 per game, while Matt Merlo averages 6.1. 

 

They split their games at last year's tourney with a win over Chicago before falling to Nebraska in a tightly contested 75-69 championship game. They won the tournament last back in 2019, which was their fourth.

 

CHICAGO

Rashaan Surles is in his third season as the Head Coach of the Cougars. Chicago is 6-10 on the season and 4-7 in conference play. 

 

Offensively the Cougars average 78.8 points per game as they allow 83.3 a game. Three players average double figures for Chicago with Jacob Collicott, Joel Watts, and Darrian Williams scoring 19.1, 11.4, and 10.1 per game. Collicott leads the team in rebounds at 9.7 rebounds a game while Watts dishes out 4 assists a game.  

 

The Cougars picked up a win and a loss at the tournament last season as they fell to Wisconsin in the first round before picking up a win against Ann Arbor in the consolation match. They hold 14 tournament titles all-time with their last coming in 2011.

 

NEBRASKA

The Bulldogs are led by Head Coach Ben Limback who is in his 12th season leading the Bulldogs. Nebraska is 15-4 on the season and 10-3 in conference. They are receiving votes in the most recent NAIA Coaches Poll. 

 

The Bulldogs are averaging 87.1 points per game this season while only allowing 75.0. They are offensively led by Tristan Smith (20.5 Points per game) and Noah Schutte (16.7 ppg). Those two also led the team in rebounds per game as Smith averages 7.9 while Schutte averages 7.3.

 

Nebraska won their 30th CIT Championship last season with wins over Ann Arbor and Wisconsin respectively. They have won the three previous titles.

 


CHEER

As a non-NAIA competition, the scoring system is out of 90, compared to the typical 100 in NAIA scoring. 

 

None of the four teams have competed yet this season.

 

ANN ARBOR

The team won its fifth straight CIT title in 2024 by scoring 67.3 points and beating second-place Nebraska by nearly seven points.

 

WISCONSIN

The Falcons were fourth at last year's competition as they scored 48.83 points.

 

NEBRASKA

Nebraska took home a second-place finish at CIT last season with a score of 60.52 points.

 

CHICAGO

Chicago placed third in the tournament last season, recording 56.20 points.

 


DANCE

As a non-NAIA competition, the scoring system was out of 70, compared to the typical 100 in NAIA scoring.

 

None of the four teams have competed yet this season.

 

ANN ARBOR

The Cardinals earned their second CIT championship last year at Wisconsin. They earned first place in a tightly contested event, scoring 58.4 points. 

 

WISCONSIN

The Falcons placed second last year as they were behind the Cardinals by 1.6 points, scoring 56.8 points. They have previously won the event in 2018 and 2020.

 

NEBRASKA

Nebraska placed third at last year's competition, scoring 55.2 points. They won the championship in 2023 on their home court.

 

CHICAGO

The Cougars took home a fourth-place finish in the tournament last year as they recorded a score of 50.7 points.
