Men's Hockey lose to Wolverines in rematch

(Chelsea, MI) – The Concordia men's hockey team hosted the #23 UM-Dearborn Wolverines on Saturday evening in a rematch of the night before. The Wolverines got off to a blazing start, building a 5-goal lead over the course of the game as they defeated the Cardinals 8-3.

 

The Wolverines kicked off the game quickly, scoring two goals within the first five minutes of the contest. UM-Dearborn would control the pace most of the remainder of the period, outshooting Concordia 15-5 and adding a third goal with 14 seconds remaining in the period to move the score to 3-0 at the end of the frame.

 

The second period included two more goals from UM-Dearborn, including one on the powerplay. Stephen Ward-Brown came in net to relieve starter Anthony Seykora, who made 14 saves in his appearance, with 12:34 to go in the second period.

 

Concordia would finally get on the board just under halfway through the middle frame, as Tyler Bieniek would be sprung on a breakaway and beat the Wolverine goalie on a backhand deke to put the Cardinals on the board. Tyler Groth and Quinn Bieniek picked up assists on the score. The Wolverines added two more powerplay goals on during the remainder of the period as they took a 7-1 lead into the final frame. 

 

CUAA would build some momentum in the third, as Abel Christians recorded the second goal of the game for Concordia off an assist from Brendan Murray. The Wolverines answered with 6:08 remaining in the period, building the lead to 6 goals again.

 

Tyler Bieniek responded 20 seconds later, deking by a defenseman and sniping the goaltender off the post for his second score of the contest. Quinn Bieniek and Tyler Groth added assists on the goal as the game would end with an 8-3 final. 

 

Stephen Ward-Brown made 14 saves in 32:34 of gametime in his relief effort. The Wolverines outshot CUAA 36-16 across the entire 60 minutes.

 

The Cardinals will be back in next Friday when they continue WHAC play against the 21st ranked Lawrence Tech Blue Devils. Puck drop is set for 8:30pm at the Arctic Coliseum in Chelsea, MI.
