Men's Hockey defeated by Wolverines, 3-2

(Dearborn, MI) – The Concordia men's hockey team was in Dearborn for their first WHAC matchup of the season on Friday night against the University of Michigan-Dearborn. The Cardinals battled in a tight, back-and-forth contet, but the Wolverines came out victorious by the score 3-2.

Zachary Janis started the game in net, making 47 saves on 50 shots faced for a .940 save percentage.

Both sides came out with offensive chances in the opening frames, with the Wolverines striking first midway through the period and using two powerplays to control the pace of play throughout the period. Janis stood tall for the Cards in the first 20, though, making 13 saves to keep the score 1-0 going into the intermission.

UM-Dearborn continued momentum in the 2nd period, outshooting CUAA 23-11 in the frame, but Janis kept the door shut, blanking the Wolverines in the period. The Cardinals would take advantage of the steller goaltending too, as Kyle Hebner would convert on the powerplay with just over a minute to go in the frame, bringing the game to one goal apiece going into the second break.

UM-Dearborn started the final frame quickly, scoring a pair of goals within the first six minutes of the 3rd period to make it a 3-1 game in crunch time. Concordia fought back, however, firing 13 shots on goal in the last 20 minutes of play as they worked to close the margin.

The Cardinals finally converted with 2:45 to go, once again on the powerplay when Seth Francois would fire a puck past the net minder to make it a 3-2 game. Kyle Hebner and Zane Rydel picked up helpers on the score.

The Cards continued to push the pace, but the Wolverines were just able to hold off, eventually clinching the game by a final score of 3-2.

Concordia will be back in action on tomorrow evening when they host the Wolverines in a rematch. Puck drop is set for 5:30pm at the Arctic Edge in Canton, MI.
