(Ann Arbor, MI) – Concordia men's basketball played host to UM-Dearborn on Wednesday evening in a WHAC matchup. The Cardinals overcame an early deficit to secure an 81-68 victory in conference play.
Joey Garwood led the team with 33 points and tied Zavion McClendon for a team-high 9 rebounds. McClendon added 16 points while Devyn Jones was also in double figures with 11. Mason Canfield had a team high 6 assists.
Joey Garwood made a layup to open scoring. Nate Brighton and Garwood knocked down 3-pointers and both Mason Canfield and Devyn Jones converted layups. Zavion McClendon scored on a drive to the basket and Joey Garwood added another 3-pointer. Colby Chapman hit a triple as well and the game was tied 22-22 with 10:20 to play.
UM-Dearborn took a 29-22 lead at the 8:06 mark, but the Cardinals fought back with a triple from Devyn Jones and an "and-1" from Nate Brighton. Joey Garwood and Zavion McClendon drained free throws to tie the game 32-32. McClendon hit a go-ahead 3-pointer and Mark DeVries also converted from behind the arc. A triple from McClendon and a layup by Mason Canfield gave CUAA a 46-40 lead at halftime.
Devyn Jones scored inside to start the second half. Joey Garwood added a basket and Devyn Jones drained a pair of free throws. Zavion McClendon made a quick drive to the hoop and Joey Garwood hit a 3-pointer for a 57-54 lead at the midway point.
Joey Garwood continued his standout game by pump-faking multiple defenders to hit a jumpshot. Garwood added a pair of "and-1"s along with a 3-pointer down the stretch to pace the Concordia offense.
A layup from Devyn Jones and free throws from Zavion McClendon gave the Cardinals a double-digit lead with 30 seconds remaining. Colby Chapman chipped in a pair of free throws to seal the 81-68 win.
Concordia will return home this Saturday to host Cornerstone at 3pm.
