Men's Soccer blanks Lourdes for 1-0 win at home

(Ann Arbor, MI) The Concordia Men's Soccer Team hosted the Gray Wolves from Lourdes Wednesday afternoon for a WHAC matchup. The Cardinals were able to score off of a Nicholas Corona penalty kick in the first half and hold off the Gray Wolves in the second for the 1-0 victory.

Kyri Wixom was able to come up with a big save on a Lourdes free kick from 20 yards out early in the first half which he followed up with another save in the box.

Bryce Ferrin had a pair of opportunities where he almost got in behind the Lourdes backline, but was unable to get a strong look at goal on the onset.

Just under 30 minutes into the game, Nicholas Corona sent a long ball over the top to Bryce Ferrin who was able to run it down and draw a foul in the box. Corona took the penalty kick for the Cardinals and was able to score convincingly to put the Cardinals up 1-0.

Early in the second half the Gray Wolves had a pair of chances denied by Wixom which led to corner kicks, but the Cardinal defense was able to hold firm.

The Cardinals got a look later in the half when Corona fired a shot from the edge of the box which was saved by the diving Gray Wolves keeper.

Lourdes continued to play on the front foot, getting several opportunities, but the Cardinals were able to keep the Gray Wolves off the board. The Cardinals were even able to overcome a period of time when they were playing down a man due to injury. Luke Neuhaus came up with a defensive save at one point during the Gray Wolves attack.

The Cardinals were able to hold on for their first clean sheet of the season and their first win in conference play.

Coming up next for the Cardinals is another home game this Friday when they host Rochester University. The team will celebrate Senior Day with kickoff coming at 3:00 PM.
