Cardinals Unable to Complete Comeback against Blue Devils

Coming off a last minute loss to Siena Heights last Saturday, the Concordia University Women's Basketball team looked to put an end to their two game loosing streak against the Lawrence Tech Blue Devils. Ultimately, the Blue Devils hot start would prove too much for the Cardinals to comeback from, falling by a score of 75-56.

Stat leaders for the Cardinals were J'may Simmons with 12 points (6-18 FG, 0-1 3PT, 0-0 FT) and 6 rebounds; Tris'styn Williams with 11 points (4-11 FG, 0-0 3PT, 3-5 FT) and 3 rebounds; and Asaria Turnman with 7 points (2-5 FG, 1-2 3PT, 2-2 FT), 1 rebound, and 1 assist.

The first quarter opened up as a close defensive matchup, but LTU found their stride late in the quarter while Concordia struggled to get something going on offense. Trailing by 10, the Lady Cards were being out rebounded 14-2 and allowed their opponent to have twice as many successful field goals (LTU 8-15 vs. CUAA 4-13). This was a major factor in the 21-11 score heading into the second quarter.

The second quarter started out much like the first quarter ended, with the Blue Devils rolling on offense and the Cardinals failing to respond. Now trailing by 21 points, the Cards had their backs against the wall to try and cut the lead before halftime. Doing just that, the offense, led by Ally Lenz, chipped Lawrence Tech's lead to 14 points and a 38-24 halftime score.

Coming out of the half, Concordia implemented a press style of defense which had immediate results right out of the gate. While still struggling on offense, the Cards slowly but surely started finding their rhythm, eventually cutting the Blue Devil lead to 9 points. LTU wouldn't go down without a fight however, still leading 56-46, heading into the fourth and final quarter of play.

Fueled by their defense and improved shooting, CUAA seemed to turn on the jets just at the right time midway through the fourth quarter, cutting Lawrence Tech's lead to just 6. Things then took a turn for the worse with LTU slowing down their pace of play and making consistent shots, rebuilding their lead and going on to win the game 75-56.

Next up for the Cardinals is a home matchup against the number 22 ranked University of Michigan-Dearborn on Tuesday. Tipoff is set for 6pm in the Cardinal Field House.
