Blue Devils control Cardinals 79-59 in WHAC defeat

(Ann Arbor, MI) – Concordia women's basketball returned home to host Lawrence Tech in WHAC conference play. The Cardinals entered 13-8 overall and 5th in the WHAC with a 7-5 record while the Blue Devils came in 15-8 overall and 4th in the WHAC with a 9-4 mark. The teams played to a 20-20 tie after the 1st, but strong 3-point shooting (14-28 overall) lifted Lawrence Tech to a 79-59 win.

Katie Snow (JR/Grosse Pointe Woods, MI) led Concordia with 15 points in the game. Tris'styn Williams (JR/New Baltimore, MI) had a double-double with 11 points and a team-high 10 rebounds in the contest. J'May Simmons was also in double figures with 11 points.

Katie Snow scored the first Cardinal basket after 5 unanswered Lawrence Tech points. Baskets from Madison Birchmeier (FR/Corunna, MI) and Tris'styn Williams helped Concordia to keep pace early in the quarter. Asaria Turman (FR/Ypsilanti, MI) converted in the post and Lindsey Ferrington (FR/Flint, MI) tied the game 13-13 with a stepback triple. Katie Snow gave the Cardinals their first lead with a layup and J'May Simmons added a 3-pointer. Lawrence Tech tied the match 20-20 after the 1st with a triple at the buzzer.

The Blue Devils started the 2nd quarter on an 11-0 run until Asaria Turman spun in the paint and made a layup. Lawrence Tech continued to drain baskets from behind the arc to extend their lead into double digits. Samantha Dorn (FR/Brownstown, MI) added a basket and Katie Snow made several free throws but Lawrence Tech led 47-30 heading to the locker room.

Katie Snow backed her way under the basket for a layup to open scoring in the 3rd. After Lawrence Tech took a 54-36 lead with a 3-pointer, J'May Simmons began an 11-0 run as the Cardinals looked to make a comeback. Averi Bebble (SO/Gaylord, MI) converted an old-fashioned three-point play during the run and Tris'styn Williams added a spinning layup to pull the team within 7 points. However, a pair of triples rebuilt the Blue Devils' lead and CUAA trailed 60-49 after the 3rd.

J'May Simmons scored the first basket in the 4th quarter. While the Cardinals pushed their deficit to within single digits on several occasions, Lawrence Tech continued their strong shooting from behind the arc and maintained their lead. Jade Finfera (FR/Delta, OH) added a late triple for Concordia, but the Blue Devils secured a 79-59 win.

The Cardinals will remain at home on Saturday, February 1 when the team hosts the University of Northwestern Ohio. Tip-off is set for 1pm.
