Women's Hockey shuts down Spartans for 3-0 win

(Chelsea, MI) Concordia woman's hockey team took home a thrilling win on Saturday against Michigan State University.

The cardinals came out strong on Saturday night as they looked for revenge against the Spartans from Michigan State. Opportunity came knocking for the Spartans when Concordia picked up a penalty. The Spartans were unable to capitalize though leaving the first period scoreless.

Going into the second period both teams came out firing. It looked as though there was going to be another scoreless period when Grace Dodgson received a stellar pass from Mackenzie Smith to land the puck in the back of the net for the Cardinals. This gave the Cardinals the momentum as both teams headed to the locker room.

Looking to keep the momentum going into the third period, the Cardinals looked to score. Halfway through the period, Adriana Rugerio passed the puck up the ice to an open Dodgson who took it down the ice and sniped the goalie top shelf. Down 2-0, the Spartans fired puck after puck at the net, but nothing got past Concordia goalie Lizzy Knappenberger. With just ten seconds left in the game, Grace Dodgson got a breakaway to score another goal for the Cardinals.

This was a game that was full of a few first. Dodgson picked up not only her first collegiate hat trick, but it was also the first hat trick in program history. Knappenberger also picked up her first D1 shut out. The Cardinals look to add on the D1 wins as they take on the University of Michigan D1 team at Yost Ice Arena this Thursday. Puck drop is scheduled for 9:30 pm.
