Calka’s late goal sends Cardinals home winners in 2OT

(Mount Vernon, OH) The Concordia University women's soccer team took to the pitch as they traveled to Mount Vernon, Ohio for their final tune-up before Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play begins on Saturday. The Cardinals came into the game at 5-1, while Mount Vernon came in at 3-3.

The game featured Anna Roman collecting eight saves on the game while Bryce Calka collected the first goal of her career.

The first half of the game saw the Cardinals playing the majority in their defensive half of the field as the Cougars tallied five of the first six shots, despite this the Cardinals were able to hold the Cougars to no goals as goalie Anna Roman had five saves in the first half.

The second half saw much the same back and forth play as the Cardinals were unable to get any offense going in the rainy conditions. Two of the Cardinals shots on goal came in the 47th, Kendra Lewis, and the 56th minute by Allison Lentz as those saw some of the better opportunities for Concordia.

CUAA was able to control the overtime period for the most part as they held the Cougars to no shots as opposed to their three. The most important play of the game though came on a corner kick in 103rd minute as Kendra Lewis was able to put in in the middle of the box and find Bryce Calka, who was abel to slip the ball underneath the goalie for the win.

The Cardinals will begin WHAC play on Saturday as they travel to Rochester to take on the Warriors with kickoff starting at 1pm.
