Cardinals draw with 25th ranked UNOH

(Ann Arbor, MI) The Concordia women's soccer team hosted 25th ranked University of Northwestern Ohio (UNOH) this Wednesday afternoon in a matchup between two of the top teams in the WHAC. Concordia came out of the gate quick in both halves, scoring in the first 5 minutes both times to go up 2-0, but the Racers came back late, forcing a 2-2 draw.

The Cardinals got off to a quick start when a Hazel Wright long ball was brought down by Megan Starkey and sent to Kendra Lewis. Lewis sent the ball past the Racer keeper to give the Cardinals the 1-0 advantage within two minutes of kickoff. UNOH's center back Shakira O'Malley headed a shot wide off of a Racer corner later in the half. Taia Vega would send a shot off of the post on a pass from Kiera Savage in one of Concordia's best looks of the half.

Less than five minutes into the second half Danielle Bracken found Isabel Stropich who used the outside of her right boot to curl the ball past UNOH keeper and make it a 2-0 game. It wasn't until there was just under 18 minutes remaining in the match when UNOH's O'Malley flicked a ball off of a corner kick over her head and just above a Cardinal defender on the far post. It was then UNOH's Ariana Mondiri who finished a loose ball of a corner kick with under four minutes remaining to knot the game up at 2-2. Megan Starkey was able to get off a last second shot for the Cardinals, but it was saved by the UNOH keeper, sending the game to overtime.

UNOH controlled the first overtime, getting several chances, but Anna Roman did well to keep the Racers out of the net. In the second overtime, the Cardinals created more chances, but were not able to convert resulting in a draw for the two sides.

Next up for the Cardinals will be another WHAC matchup with UM-Dearborn on Friday, October 8th. Kick off will be at 4:00 PM at Ferry Field at Cardinal Stadium.
