Volleyball competes in day one of Amber McClure Fayerweather Memorial Tournament
 
 

(Upland, IN) – Concordia volleyball competed on day 1 of the Amber McClure Fayerweather Memorial Tournament on Friday afternoon.  The Cardinals squared off against Thomas More and Spring Arbor, battling hard but falling 3-1 and 3-2. 

 

Game 1 – TM 3, CUAA 1 

Breann June led the team with 11 kills.  Abigail Austin had a team-high 23 assists.  Korie Fowler led the back end with 21 digs. 

 

Set 1 – CUAA 25, TM 21 

Hannah Duchene combined with Breann June for a block and then added 3 straight kills for a 4-1 CUAA lead.  The Cardinals led by several points through most of the set, but Thomas More forced a 16-16 tie later.  Madalyn Lisman made a go-ahead kill and Hannah Duchene made the game-winning kill for a 25-21 win. 

 

Set 2 – TM 25, CUAA 21 

Hannah Duchene made the first Concordia kill in set 2.  Breann June made two early kills and the Cardinals maintained a lead through most of the set.  CUAA held a 20-16 lead, but a 9-1 run by Thomas More finished set 2. 

 

Set 3 – TM 25, CUAA 15 

Claudia Grepke had the Cardinals' first kill in set 3.  Kayla Peters made an early kill and an ace as Concordia looked to keep the set close.  However, Thomas More pulled away to claim the third set 25-15. 

 

Set 4 – TM 25, CUAA 19 

Breann June made the first Concordia kill in set 4.  Jessalyn Peavyhouse and Madalyn Lisman combined for a block and the Cardinals led 9-5 after a Tara Drinane ace.  Peavyhouse and Lisman made another block midway early in the set, but Thomas More eventually retook the lead and finished the game. 

 

 

Game 2 – SAU 3, CUAA 2 

Breann June and Kayla Peters tied for a team-high 14 kills.  Abigail Austin led the team with 37 assists.  McKenzie Peters led the back end with 25 digs. 

 

Set 1 – SAU 25, CUAA 22 

Breann June ended a 5-0 SAU run with a kill.  Hannah Duchene and Madeline Vnuk added kills as the set continued and Kayla Peters made 2 late kills down the stretch.  A block by Jessalyn Peavyhouse and Breann June made the score 24-22, but Spring Arbor secured the final point. 

 

Set 2 – SAU 25, CUAA 22 

Tara Drinane had Concordia's first kill in set 2.  Breann June made an early ace and the lead continued to shift back and forth as the set continued.  Madeline Vnuk and McKenzie Peters added aces as well, but Spring Arbor pulled out the win in set 2. 

 

Set 3 – CUAA 25, SAU 18 

Breann June had the first Concordia kill in set 3.  Hannah Duchene made an early kill and block and Abigail Austin notched back-to-back kills.  Claudia Grepke made two straight kills midway through the set and Breann June clinched set 3 with a kill to extend the game. 

 

Set 4 – CUAA 25, SAU 21 

Breann June made the first Cardinal kill in set 4.  Claudia Grepke notched 2 kills and a block in a closely contested set.  Kills by Kayla Peters helped the team to pull away and Breann June finished off set 4 with a kill and a block. 

 

Set 5 – SAU 15, CUAA 12 

Breann June started set 5 with a kill.  The Cardinals capitalized on errors to go ahead 5-1, but SAU fought back to take a 6-5 lead.  2 kills and a block from Kayla Peters put the Cardinals up 9-8.  Breann June added two kills down the stretch, but Spring Arbor was able to claim a 15-12 hard-fought win. 

 

Concordia will play again tomorrow against St. Thomas at 10am and IU-Kokomo at 2:30pm.
