Volleyball competes on day one of Liz Lykowski Memorial Tournament
 

(Fort Wayne, IN) – Concordia volleyball competed at day 1 of the Liz Lykowski Memorial Tournament on Friday.  The Cardinals forced multiple extra-point sets in the first game, falling 3-1 to IU-Southeast.  CUAA then fell 3-1 to Saint Ambrose in their final contest of the day. 

 

 

Game 1 – IUSE 3, CUAA 1 

Kayla Peters led Concordia with 12 kills.  Abigail Austin had a team-high 15 assists.  McKenzie Peters led the back end with 12 digs. 

 

Set 1 – CUAA 25, IUSE 20 

Breann June had the Cardinals' first kill in set 1.  McKenzie Peters and Paige Staton made early service aces in a close set.  The lead continued to change hands but Concordia clinched the set with kills from Jessalyn Peavyhouse and Claudia Grepke. 

 

Set 2 – IUSE 25, CUAA 22 

Jessalyn Peavyhouse made the first Concordia kill in set 2.  Kayla Peters notched 2 early kills and Peavyhouse added a block.  The set went down to a 21-21 tie after a Breann June ace, but IUSE pulled away for a 25-22 win. 

 

Set 3 – IUSE 28, CUAA 26 

Breann June made an early ace in set 3.  Kayla Peters continued to make kills and Hannah Duchene chipped in an ace.  The set went down to the wire and required extra points with CUAA holding a 26-25 lead, but IUSE came back for a set 3 win. 

 

Set 4 – IUSE 27, CUAA 25 

Tara Drinane started set 4 with a kill.  Abigail Austin caught fire as a server, recording 4 aces midway through the set.  Concordia held a 24-22 led after several kills from Kayla Peters, but IUSE was able to force extra points once again and took the 27-25 win. 

 

 

Game 2 – SAU 3, CUAA 1 

Claudia Grepke led the team with 12 kills.  Abigail Austin notched a team-high 14 assists.  McKenzie Peters led the back end with 8 digs. 

 

Set 1 – SAU 25, CUAA 11 

Claudia Grepke started the game with a kill.  Hannah Duchene ended a 7-0 SAU run with a kill and Paige Staton made an early ace.  Claudia Grepke had back-to-back kills later on but SAU took set 1. 

 

Set 2 – CUAA 25, SAU 23 

Claudia Grepke had the first Cardinal kill in set 2.  Ella Lucas recorded an early ace and the set continued to be closely contested.  After trailing 19-13, CUAA made a 9-2 run to take the lead.  Attack errors from Saint Ambrose helped the Cardinals to a 25-23 win in set 2. 

 

Set 3 – SAU 25, CUAA 14 

Ella Lucas tied the set 4-4 with an ace.  Madeline Vnuk and Tara Drinane combined for an early block and Madalyn Lisman notched a kill and a block.  McKenzie Peters chipped in an ace but Saint Ambrose eventually pulled away for a 25-14 win. 

 

Set 4 – SAU 25, CUAA 22 

Claudia Grepke had the first Concordia kill in set 4.  The set was tied 12-12 midway through off a block from Madalyn Lisman and an ace from Abigail AustinJessalyn Peavyhouse cut the deficit to 23-21 late in the set with a kill, but Saint Ambrose finished off the game with a set 4 win. 

 

 

Concordia will compete in day 2 of the tournament tomorrow at 10:00am against Goshen and at 2:00pm versus Saint Francis (IL).
