Volleyball sweeps Day Two of the Liz Lykowski Memorial Tournament

(Fort Wayne, IN) - The Concordia Cardinals Volleyball team returned to the court on Saturday for the second half of the Liz Lykowski Memorial Tournament at Indiana Tech. The Cardinals fell in both games on Friday night, so they were looking to comeback on Saturday. The Cardinals came into the day at 2-7, while Goshen came in at 2-11 and St. Francis came in at 9-5.

 

Concordia 3, Goshen 0

Leading the Cardinals in the first game of the day was Kayla Peters with 13 kills, Claudia Grepke with 11 kills and Tara Drinane had 9 kills. Abigail Austin had 23 assists while Madeline Vnuk had 11. McKenzie Peters tallied 19 Digs throughout the first game. 

 

Set 1 - Concordia 25, Goshen 17

The first set saw a lot of back and forth play with the set tied at 5. The Cardinals would then proceed to go on a 6-point streak, with two kills from Kayla Peters and one from Duchene. That lead would suffice for the Cardinals as they would go onto score 9 of the final 14 points to win set 1. 

 

Set 2 - Concordia 25, Goshen 23

The Cardinals were able to jump out to a quick 17-9 lead in the second set. Although that lead would quickly shrink as The Maple Leafs scored 12 of the next 16 points to tie the set at 21. Following a kill from Grepke to get to set point, where Drinane would get the final kill of the set. 

 

Set 3 - Concordia 25, Goshen 22

In a turn of events the Maple Leafs jumped out to a big lead to start the third set as they would go up 6-1 and then 10-6. The Cardinals would then start mounting their comeback as they tried clawing their way back into the game. A short 4 point run tied the set at 12. The game would go back and forth until the game was 20-17 in Goshen favor, until the Cards would storm to score 8 of the final 10 points to win the final match. 

 

Concordia 3, St. Francis (IL) 0

Kayla Peters once again led the Cardinals in kills with 17, while Grepke tallied 12. Austin and Vnuk recorded 20 and 14 assists respectively, while Mackenzie Peters led the defensive end with 18 digs. 

 

Set 1 - Concordia 25, St. Francis (IL) 16

The Cardinals once again would not mess around to start the game building up a 17-11 advantage. The Fighting Saints would fight back to make it 19-16, but The Cards would prevail scoring the final 6 points as they would take advantage of 5 St. Francis errors. 

 

Set 2 - Concordia 25, St. Francis (IL) 15

When the teams switched sides nothing much changed as they take 15 of the first 23 points in the set. Multiple more Fighting Saints errors and some kills from Kayla Peters and Grepke the Cards would take set 2.

 

Set 3 - Concordia 25, St. Francis (IL) 20

The final score in what would have seemed closer, but Concordia was able to jump once for the third straight set by getting a 10-4 lead with a couple of kills from Duchene and Drinane. The set would then see St. Francis attempt to mount a comeback, but this would be to no avail as they would finish out the Fighting Saints to complete the sweep on the day. 

 

The Cardinals will return to WHAC play on Wednesday as they back down to Fort Wayne to take on the Warriors of Indiana Tech with first serve at 7 PM.
