Volleyball downs UNOH 3-1 in home opener

 

(Ann Arbor, MI) – Concordia volleyball held their home opener on Friday evening, hosting UNOH in a WHAC conference matchup.  Both teams entered the contest looking to claim their first WHAC win.  CUAA fed off the energy of the fans and took the match 3-1 to bring home a Cardinal win.

Kayla Peters led the team with 15 kills and 26 digs.  Madeline Vnuk recorded a team-high and personal best 40 assists.  Jessalyn Peavyhouse led the Cardinals with 3 blocks.

 

Set 1 – CUAA 25, UNOH 18

Tara Drinane had a solid kill for the first Cardinal point.  Jessalyn Peavyhouse had two early kills and Kayla Peters made several strong hits midway through the set to earn points.  Hannah Duchene and Claudie Grepke combined for a block and the Cardinals weathered a late UNOH run with Grepke smashing the winning kill.

 

Set 2 – CUAA 25, UNOH 22

Tara Drinane had the Cardinals' first kill in set 2.  Both teams traded runs early with Kayla Peters diving for a one-handed hit that went for a kill.  The closely contested set featured 9 tie scores with multiple lead changes.  Trailing 20-18, Claudia Grepke hammered 3 straight kills to give the Cardinals the lead.  CUAA took set 2 by a score of 25-22.

 

Set 3 – UNOH 26, CUAA 24

Claudia Grepke had the first Concordia kill in set 3.  UNOH took a late 20-14 lead, but the Cardinals used an 8-2 run to tie the game with Kayla Peters adding 2 more kills.  Concordia forced extra points with Jessalyn Peavyhouse and Claudia Grepke combining for a powerful block and a 24-24 tie.  However, UNOH took the last 2 points to extend the match.

 

Set 4 – CUAA 25, UNOH 22

Jessalyn Peavyhouse started set 4 with a kill and Madeline Vnuk added back-to-back aces.  The lead changed hands midway through the set with Peavyhouse and Breann June combining for a block to go up 12-11.  Claudia Grepke notched back-to-back kills late in the set to put the Cardinals up 21-20.  Breann June made a powerful kill to close out the set and clinch the game.

 

Concordia will be on the road tomorrow at Lawrence Tech for another WHAC game starting at 1pm.
