Volleyball defeats Madonna on the road

 

(Livonia, MI) – Concordia volleyball traveled to rival Madonna on Wednesday night for a WHAC conference match.  The Cardinals claimed victories in the first two sets and finished off a close match in set 4 to earn the win.

Claudia Grepke led the team with 12 kills.  Madeline Vnuk had a team-high 14 assists.  McKenzie Peters secured the back end with 17 digs.  Hannah Duchene, Jessalyn Peavyhouse and Madalyn Lisman each recorded 3 blocks apiece.

 

Set 1 – CUAA 25, MU 22

Kayla Peters had the first Concordia kill in set 1.  Claudia Grepke added back-to-back kills and Peters chipped in an ace.  The lead swung midway through the set with Jessalyn Peavyhouse recording two straight kills.  With the score tied 19-19, the Cardinals were able to close the set on a 6-3 run.  Madeline Vnuk notched two aces and Madalyn Lisman hammered the winning kill.

 

Set 2 – CUAA 25, MU 21

McKenzie Peters made two aces in a 3-0 run to start set 2.  Jessalyn Peavyhouse and Kayla Peters combined for an early block and Claudia Grepke notched two kills.  After Madonna briefly took the lead, the Cardinals rallied as the set went on with Kayla Peters smashing a kill and adding two aces.  CUAA was able to hold their lead for a 25-21 set 2 win.

 

Set 3 – MU 25, CUAA 18

After Madonna started up 4-0, Hannah Duchene started a 4-0 CUAA run with a kill.  Abigail Austin made an ace and Madeline Vnuk notched back-to-back service aces for an 11-10 lead.  Hannah Duchene had 3 kills down the stretch and Concordia went up 18-17, but the Crusaders used an 8-0 run to take set 3.

 

Set 4 – CUAA 25, MU 23

Jessalyn Peavyhouse, Claudia Grepke, and Kayla Peters teamed up for a block early in set 4.  Both teams traded errors and Breann June made an ace for a 9-8 lead.  The Cardinals continued to battle back with Madalyn Lisman and Hannah Duchene teaming up for a block.  Kayla Peters had two late kills to pace the Cardinals to a 23-21 lead, but Madonna tied the match 23-23 and then took a timeout.  In two tense volleys, CUAA capitalized on Crusader errors to finish set 4 and bring home the win.

 

Concordia will return home this Friday to host Cornerstone at 7pm.
