SEASON PREVIEW: New faces look to propel Women's Cross Country

SEASON PREVIEW: New faces look to propel Women's Cross Country

(Ann Arbor, MI) - The Concordia Cardinals Women's Cross Country team opens up their 2022 season on September 2 as they will travel to the Mike Baumer Cross Country Classic at Wright State in Fairborn, OH

Head Coach Dominic Santina opens up his first season as the head coach of Concordia's men's and women's programs and had this to say about the upcoming season.

"I am curious to see what the Women's team has this year. We had only 1 returning runner from last year in Chloe Gunter. As a sophomore, she will be one we look to help lead on the course. We added Amanda Fogo, who had a great summer of training and looks strong through camp. Along with Alison Doerr, who is working to get where she wants to be, but those two are going to be big pieces to our program as freshmen. Mary Salem was a last minute addition to the team by transferring in as a junior from Oakland Community College. She had a late start to training but will work her way into competing somewhat soon. Madelyn Ankoviak switched over to our cross program after being apart of track last year and has took on the leadership role quickly and has been fantastic with it. She along with incoming freshman Madisyn Flamini are working on getting comfortable with running the 5k distance. Seraphina Ferrell was also another piece that we brought in and is working towards getting her base back under her but will also help the team out."

Concordia Personal

The Cardinals return just one runner from last year's team, sophomore Chloe Gunter, who ran in 4 meets for CUAA and set a 5k PR of 22:31.9 at the 2021 WHAC Championships. Junior Mary Salem, a transfer from Oakland Community College and the only other member of the team with running experience at the collegiate level, set a 5k PR time of 24:12.4 at the Lansing Cross Country Invitational last year. Madelyn Ankoviak, a sophomore from Sanford, Michigan, is making the switch over to cross country from track and field, and will also provide experience and leadership for the young team.

The Concordia Women's Cross Country team will be introducing four freshmen to the squad this year, as Alison Doer, Serephina Ferrell, Madisyn Flamini, and Amanda Fogo will all look to help the team out in their first season of collegiate athletics.
