Men's Hockey downs Cleary in WHAC Opener

(Howell, MI) – The Cardinals headed to Cleary to take on the Cougars in CUAA's first WHAC game of the season. The game went back and forth between the two sides, but the Cardinals would eak out the win eventually behind a late 3rd period goal by Thomas Hendry.

The contest got off to a fast start, as Cleary struck first less than 5 minutes into the contest. The Cardinals struck back quickly, however, as Abel Christians fired a low, bouncing shot from the point that made its way through several bodies and into the back of the net, getting CUAA on the board. Tyler Bieniek picked up an assist on the score.

The scoring continued when Cleary sprung a 2-on-1 and connected on an open back door pass to take the lead back. Opportunities flowed throughout the remainder of the opening frame, each side recording 11 shots on goal after the first 20.

The Cardinals would kill off a penalty to begin the second period, then went back on the attack. Just a little over 5 mintues into the frame, Derek Hebner took the puck on an odd man rush, pulled up in the right corner, and made a beautiful pass across the ice to his brother Derek Hebner, who took a one timer and fired the puck home to tie the game up at 2.

The third period remaind more of the same, as each side went back-and-forth, getting grade-A chances to take the lead on both sides. Eventually, Brandon Troyer would lead an odd man rush into the offensive zone and feed a pass across to Thomas Hendry, who finished to give the Cardinals the go-ahead goal with 5:54 remaining in regulation. Kyle Hebner also picked up an assist on the score.

Cleary would keep pressing, but the Concordia defense did a great job at denying opportunities for the Cougars late, and eventually the time ran out, securing a Cardinal win. Anthony Seykora started in net for CUAA, making 27 saves on 30 shots as he improved to an impressive 3-0 record on the season.

The Cardinals will be back in action tomorrow night when they host Cleary in the weekend series finale. Puck drop is set for 9pm at the Arctic Coliseum.
