Baseball take a game from ONU in four game series

(Bourbonnais, IL) – Concordia baseball played a weekend series of four 7-inning games at Olivet Nazarene to continue their season.  The Cardinals came in 3-3 overall on the year while the Tigers entered with a 2-9 record.  CUAA fell in both games on Friday but took one of two on Saturday to bring home a win.

 

Game 1 – ONU 2, CUAA 1

Joe Tany started on the mound in game 1, making 5 strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work.  Concordia struck first in the top of the 2nd when Calvin Syrjala doubled and was driven in on an RBI single from Jimmy Wressel.

Olivet Nazarene tied the game in the bottom of the 6th.  A bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 7th clinched the 2-1 win for the Tigers.

 

Game 2 – ONU 10, CUAA 3

Grain Steinborn was the starting pitcher in game 2.  Olivet Nazarene scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 1st, but the Cardinals struck back in the 2nd when Preston Sherman used an RBI groundout to score Dylan Steinke.

The Tigers scored 2 runs in the 4th and 5 runs in the 5th to take a 10-1 lead.  In the top of the 7th, Curtis Townsend scored while Adam Purdy was stealing second and Joe Jones used an RBI groundout to drive in Purdy.  However, Olivet Nazarene took the game 10-3.

 

Game 3 – ONU 9, CUAA 1

Brandon Decker began at pitcher in game 3, making 3 strikeouts in 2 innings.  Concordia scored in the top of the 1st when Dylan Steinke hit a lead-off double and was driven in on an RBI single from Jordan Sherman.  However, Olivet Nazarene used a big 7-run 3rd inning to take the lead.

The Tigers added 2 runs in the 4th.  While the Cardinals turned a double play in the 6th, CUAA was unable to score any more runs and fell 9-1.

 

Game 4 – CUAA 12, ONU 3

Timothy Pomaville was the starting pitcher for game 4, pitching 4.2 innings.  Grant Steinborn opened scoring in the 1st inning with an RBI single to score Adam Purdy.  The Cardinals added 2 more runs in the 2nd with Jarrett Batanian and Chris Lowe hitting RBI singles.

An RBI single in the 5th from Calvin Syrjala put CUAA up 4-0, but Olivet Nazarene used 3 runs in the bottom of the 5th to tighten the game.  Concordia extended their lead with a 5-run 6th inning, started by a 2-RBI single from Jimmy Wressel.  Grant Steinborn, Calvin Syrjala and Victor Diaz all added RBI hits.

CUAA tacked on 3 more runs in the 7th with runners driven in by Joe Jones, Chris Lowe and Grant Steinborn.  Concordia secured the 12-3 win after Jacob Henry secured the final 3 outs.

 

The Cardinals will play again on Tuesday, March 9 in a road doubleheader against Brescia starting at 4:00.
