Cardinals fall late to Blue Devils, 74-70

(Southfield, MI) The Concordia University men's basketball team opened up their 2021-22 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference season as they faced off against the Blue Devils of Lawrence Tech University on Wednesday evening. The Cardinals came into the game with an overall record of 3-2, while the Blue Devils entered with a 2-3 record.

The Cardinals got the scoring started quickly and right away as they were able to get out to a 15-2 lead with scoring from all five starters. From there Zackary Johnson would have his basket sandwiched in between two Thomas Hronis baskets to go up 22-8.

Throughout the next six minutes, LTU would slowly work themselves back into the game though tying it up at 26 at the 7:36 mark. The two teams would then be even throughout the next four minutes when the score was even at 37 before Bernard Kasanda would add five points and Thomas Hronis would add another three.

Colton Ritesema and Devyn Jones scored right out of the locker room in the second half. At the 16:54 mark, Thomas Hronis made a three to put the Cards up 17 for their largest lead of the game. With LTU crawling back into the game, down three at this point, Thomas Hronis and Colton Ritesema scored seven straight to get back to a 10 point game.

A 16-0 run put the Blue Devils back in front with their largest lead of the game with 38 seconds left in the game. Bernard Kasanda would hit a three-pointer with 5 seconds left to give the Cards a chance but a couple of LTU free throws iced the game.

The Cards get back onto the court on Saturday as they continue WHAC play against Indiana Tech with tipoff at 3 pm.
