Men's Soccer blanks Olivet 2-0 in season opener

(Ann Arbor, MI) – Concordia men's soccer opened their 2021 on their home turf with a non-conference matchup versus Olivet College. CUAA played a solid game defensively and 2 goals by Nicholas Corona lifted the team to a 2-0 shutout win.

 

Kyri Wixom received the starting nod in goal for the Cardinals, making 3 saves.   Concordia threatened early in the half with a corner kick off the foot of Tanguy Flachez.  Both teams played defensive soccer until the Cardinals broke through in the 28th minute with a goal.  Bryce Schaner sent a cross to Nicholas Corona who was able to bury the ball in the net on the run.  Kyri Wixom remained sharp in net with 2 late saves and CUAA led 1-0 at halftime.

Ryan Webb entered at goalie in the 2nd half, notching 3 saves of his own.  Concordia extended their lead in the 2nd half with a goal in the 51st minute.  Christian Margilaj kicked a high cross in front of the net and Nicholas Corona headed the ball into the goal for his 2nd marker of the game.

Ryan Webb made back-to-back saves during an Olivet attack in the 60th minute.  The Cardinals continued to attack on shots after crosses with James Swanson and Christian Margilaj taking shots on goal.  Nicholas Corona had the opportunity for a hat trick in the final seconds but his header sailed just over the net.  CUAA claimed the 2-0 shutout win as time expired.

 

Concordia will return to action on Wednesday, September 1 when they travel to Alma.  The game is set to begin at 4:00pm.
