Strong second half lifts women's basketball over Cornerstone 66-38

(Grand Rapids, MI) – Concordia women's basketball concluded the WHAC regular season on Saturday afternoon with a road game against Cornerstone. The Cardinals came in 17-11 overall and 11-8 in the WHAC while the last-place Golden Eagles entered 3-26 overall and 1-18 in WHAC play. While the first half was closely contested, CUAA surged ahead in the second half to roll to a 66-38 victory. The win secured a trip back to Grand Rapids as the Cardinals will face fourth seeded Aquinas College as the fifth seed in the WHAC quarterfinals on Thursday.

Katie Snow (JR/Grosse Pointe Woods, MI) led Concordia with 16 points and 8 rebounds in the game. Lindsey Ferrington (FR/Flint, MI), Samantha Dorn (FR/Brownstown, MI) and Tris'styn Wiliams tied for second with 9 points apiece.

Katie Snow opened scoring in the game with a layup. The Cardinals continued to convert inside with Samantha Dorn and Tris'styn Williams (JR/New Baltimore, MI) adding layups. Stephanie Abraham (SO/Marine City, MI) knocked down a pair of free throws to build a 10-4 lead at the 4:32 mark. Concordia to stay ahead with baskets from Dorn and Williams and CUAA led 15-10 after the 1st.

Katie Snow sidestepped a defender and scored a layup to begin the 2nd quarter. Cornerstone rallied with an 8-1 run to tie game 18-18 at the 6:02 mark. A free throw from Katie Snow put the Cardinals back on top and began a 6-0 run with Lindsey Ferrington adding a 3-pointer. Samantha Dorn chipped in with an old-fashioned three-point play for a 27-20 advantage late in the quarter. Stephanie Abraham added a late layup to put CUAA ahead 29-22 at halftime.

Katie Snow scored inside to begin scoring in the 3rd quarter. After a Cornerstone 3-pointer, Tris'styn Williams scored inside to start a 16-0 CUAA run. Samantha Dorn made a quick drive, Lindsey Ferrington drained a triple, and Katie Snow capped off the run with an old-fashioned three-point play. A 3-pointer from Jerrica Neal (SR/Gary, IN) with 19 seconds remaining put the Cardinals ahead 50-28 after the 3rd.

Stephanie Abraham made two solid layups inside to start the 4th quarter. Jade Finfera (FR/Delta, OH) added an offensive putback and Concordia continued to dominate on the scoreboard. Lindsey Ferrington drained another 3-pointer and Finfera chipped in a second layup. Aly Lenz (SO/Fenton, MI) recorded two baskets down the stretch and Concordia secured the 66-38 win.

Concordia finishes the regular season with an 18-11 overall record and a 12-8 WHAC record. The Cardinals secured the fifth seed in the WHAC postseason with the win on Saturday and are set to face the fourth seeded Aquinas Saints on Thursday. Tip off will be at 6:30 pm in Grand Rapids.
