Women's Hockey unable to hold on to early lead against Adrian

(Chelsea, MI) The Concordia Women's Hockey team took to the ice Thursday night for a CCWHA matchup against Adrian. The Cardinals jumped out to an early two goal lead, but the Bulldogs went on unanswered runs in the second and third periods to win the game 9-4.

 

Kaitlyn Audet made her first start between the pipes for the Cardinals and recorded 40 saves. Madelyne Petrie led the Cards with two goals and Aaliyah James had three assists on the night as well.

 

 

Reagan Tolley won the puck and was able to score in transition just over a minute into the game. Later in the first, Madelyne Petrie was able to score off a breakaway to make it 2-0 Cardinals.

 

The Bulldogs responded quickly with a shorthanded goal to pull within one. Then, with thirty seconds left in the first period, the Bulldogs were able to even things up going into the first intermission.

 

 

The Cardinals were able to take advantage of a powerplay three minutes into the second when Sara Kaczmarek gave the Cardinals the one goal lead.

 

Just over two minutes later the Bulldogs were able to even things back up at three a piece. Three minutes afterwards, Adrian was able to sneak one past Audet and put it in for their first lead of the day. Just a minute after that, the Bulldogs were able to take advantage of a delayed penalty and a 6 on 5 situation to grow their lead to two. The Bulldogs made it a three goal game when the Adrian forward missed wide left, but was able to grab the rebound off the boards and put it in behind Audet.

 

 

In the third period, the Cardinals were able to kill a pair of penalties while playing down two skaters. Not long after that, Madelyne Petrie was on the receiving end of an Aaliyah James pass which she fired into the net to pull the Cardinals within two.

 

The Bulldogs were able to capitalize on an errant pass in front of the net and pull ahead by three goals. With four minutes left the Bulldogs were able to score another quick pair of goals to make it a five goal lead, which they would maintain for the remainder of the game.

 

 

Next up for the Cardinals will be a game Friday night at Aquinas. Puck drop is set for 7:30 at the Southside Ice Arena in Byron Center, Michigan.
