Multiple Cardinals honored by WHAC with Seasonal Awards

(Ann Arbor, MI) - The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) announced its end-of-season awards on Monday afternoon and multiple Cardinals were honored among the first and second teams. Among those named to the teams were Jennifer Miller, Greyson Papp, and Alana Mortimer

 

The announcement of teams follows the WHAC tournament that finished up last Saturday that saw #1 Lawrence Tech finish out their undefeated season with a comeback win against #RV Siena Heights, 15-14. 

 

Miller, a senior from South Lyon, earns her second WHAC First-Team honors, after being named there last season, as she was once again one of the top defenders in the conference. Miller was top-10 in some of the main categories in the WHAC with her 48 ground balls, 56 draw controls, and 26 caused turnovers. Miller was also named the WHAC Defensive Player of the Week three times this season and one of those named the NAIA Defensive Player of the Week as well. 

 

Papp, a senior from South Bend, IN, earns her second WHAC Second-Team honors, being named their last season as well, and ends her Concordia career as one of the most prolific scorers in program history. Papp eclipsed the 100-goal mark this season with 33 goals this season, ending with 105 in her career. In the conference, Papp was tied for 18th in goals scored and was tied for 19th in points this season. 

 

Mortimer, a freshman from Georgetown, ON, earned herself WHAC Second-Team honors, after being a staple on the Cardinal defense all season. Mortimer ended her first year third on the team in caused turnovers with 19, while also tying herself for 13th in the conference as well. She was also able to pick up 35 ground balls as that was good for 17th in the WHAC. As a defender, she was able to record a hat trick in the game against Rochester earlier this season as well. 

 

Other main awards from the conference as a whole included Abby Barkdull form Indiana Tech earning Offensive Player of the Year, while Aquinas' Carli Taylor won Defensive Player of the year for the WHAC. Becoming the first midfielder of the year in the WHAC was Marissa Cirino from Siena Heights and Hannah Huebner from Lawrence Tech was the Newcomer of the Year for the conference. The winner of the coach of the year was Lawrence Tech's, Mary Ann Meltzer.

 

Cassandra Allard, Madalyn Fields, Jennifer Miller, Taylor Nesbitt, and Megan Soop were named to the All-Academic Team for meeting the WHAC requirements of a sophomore academic status while maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.25. 

 

Madalyn Fields was named the Cardinals recipient of the WHAC Champions of Character. This award is given to a representative from each participating institution that displays the five core values of the NAIA which are respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership, and sportsmanship.
