Volleyball defeats Lawrence Tech in five sets

(Ann Arbor, MI) – Concordia volleyball hosted Lawrence Tech on Friday evening in a WHAC conference matchup.  The Cardinals entered 4-7 on the year while the Blue Devils came in 0-2.  The match required a full five sets to decide, but CUAA emerged with a 3-2 victory to pick up a WHAC win.

Breann June and Kayla Peters tied for the team lead with 14 kills apiece.  Abigail Austin had a team-high 47 assists and 29 digs.  Madalyn Lisman led the Cardinals with 5 blocks.

 

Set 1 – CUAA 25, LTU 18

Tara Drinane recorded Concordia's first kill in set 1.  Breann June and McKenzie Peters added aces as the Cardinals battled to a 5-4 lead.  Kayla Peters recorded back-to-back aces and Concordia maintained their advantage as the set went on.  Multiple errors by Lawrence Tech closed out a 25-18 set 1 win for Concordia.

 

Set 2 – LTU 25, CUAA 21

Madalyn Lisman had the first kill in set 2.  The set continued to be close early on with Kaitlin Veihl making 2 early kills.  An ace from McKenzie Peters tied the set 20-20 later on, but Lawrence Tech took 5 of the last 6 points to win set 2.

 

Set 3 – CUAA 25, LTU 15

Madalyn Lisman had Concordia's first kill in set 3 for a 3-2 lead.  Ellen Stolz and Kayla Peters combined on an early block for a 4-4 tie.  Madalyn Lisman added a block and later combined with Ellen Stolz to put the Cardinals ahead 13-9.  Ellen Stolz notched the winning kill as CUAA took set three 25-15.

 

Set 4 – LTU 25, CUAA 21

Breann June had the Cardinals' first kill in set 4.  While Lawrence Tech jumped out to an 11-4 lead, Breann June made 3 kills during a 6-0 CUAA run.  Concordia managed to stay within a few points for most of the set, but Lawrence Tech extended the match with a 25-21 win in set 4.

 

Set 5 – CUAA 15, LTU 13

Madalyn Lisman and Kayla Peters combined for a block to start a 4-0 CUAA run.  A kill by Kaitlin Veihl put the Cardinals ahead 7-4 and prompted a Lawrence Tech timeout.  With Concordia ahead 14-13, Kaitlin Veihl hammered the winning kill to secure the victory.

 

Concordia will return to action tomorrow on the road at Rochester.  The game will start at 1pm.
