Volleyball outlast Warriors in WHAC battle

(Ann Arbor, MI) - The Concordia Cardinals volleyball team went on the road for a midday game against the Warriors of Rochester University on Saturday. The Cardinals entered the match at 5-7 and 1-1 in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play, while the Warriors entered at 7-10 and 1-1 in WHAC play. 

The Cardinals were led in the match by Kayla Peters and Breann June with 16 kills. Abigail Austin had a team-high 39 assists. While McKenzie Peters anchored the back line with 28 digs. 

Set 1 - CUAA 25, RU 23

Much of the first set saw the Cardinals and Warriors battling it out and going back and forth until CUAA scored five straight points while down 17-20 to move up by two. In that short run Breann June had two kills while Abigail Austin, Kayla Peters and Ellen Stolz each added a kill. Scoring three of the final five points in the set, Concordia got two kills from Ellen Stolz and then won the set on a block by Kayla Peters and Kaitlin Veihl

Set 2 - RU 25, CUAA 23

The Cards came out hot to start the second set as they would score five of the first six point with Madalyn Lisman, Kaitlyn Veihl and Abigail Austin all tallying kills. In the middle of the set momentum would slide to Rochester as they would go on a 7-1 run to go up 13-10. More back and forth play would see the Warriors up 24-19 before a four-point run from the Cards to attempt a late comeback, but would fail, dropping the set 25-23. 

Set 3 - CUAA 25, RU 17

The Cardinals were solid throughout the entire third set as they started with a 7-3 run, a 9-3 in the middle of the set, and then ended on another 9-3 run. Breann June led the set with seven kills, while Kayla Peters had four in the set. 

Set 4 - CUAA 25, RU 20

The final set would see the Warriors striking the first five points of the set before CUAA would storm back with the next six points. The Cards would take control of the set as the final lead change saw them go up 13-12 on a kill from Madalyn Liseman. Concordia would be able to control the reminder of the set as they won it 25-20. 

 

The Cardinals will return to the court on Wednesday September 22 at 7 PM when the Cardinals will visit the Golden Eagles of Cornerstone for a midweek matchup.
