CIT PREVIEW: Cardinals prepare for 71st Edition of the Concordia Invitational Tournament

(Mequon, WI) - The Concordia Invitational Tournament (CIT) has returned for the 71st edition in 2024. The tournament features four teams as Concordians from Nebraska, Wisconsin, Chicago, and Ann Arbor will meet up this weekend.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

CUAA WBB Overview

The Cardinals are 13-5 overall on the season and 12-2 in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) games. Offensively the Cardinals average 63.2 points per game, while only allowing 57.3 points. CUAA is led by Abby Long (16.2 points per game (ppg) and 4 assists per game (apg)) and Taylor Leatherman (15.1 ppg and 8.4 rebounds per game (rpg)). 

 

The Cardinals fell in their first-round game of the 2023 CIT to Chicago, 71-65. They would though pick up a win against Wisconsin in the consolation game by a score of 67-55. The Cardinals have won two CITs previously with the last coming in 2013.

CUNE WBB Overview

The Bulldogs are currently ranked 8th in the NAIA with a 15-2 record overall and 11-2 record in the GPAC. Nebraska averages 81.6 points per game, while holding opponents to just 62.7 points. Taysha Rushton leads the Bulldogs with 14.7 ppg, Mackenzie Toomey with 5.4 rpg, and Sadie Powell with 2.6 apg. 

 

The Bulldogs cruised to the 2023 CIT title after pulling off wins of 100-49 and 85-33 over Wisconsin and Chicago respectively. They have won 31 CIT titles all-time. 

CUC WBB Overview

The Cougars are 5-12 on the season with a 2-7 record in the NACC. Chicago averages 61.6 points per game offensively, but allows 67.5 points per game to their opponents. Mikalah Ennis leads the team with 13.0 ppg followed by Khaliah Reid with 11.2. Alisyn MacGregor pulls down the most rebounds with 9.0 per game while Cydnei Mitchell and Nazuri Whigham record 2.1 and 2.0 assists per game respectively. 

 

The Cougars advanced to the Championship last year after beating Ann Arbor, 71-65. They would ultimately fall to Nebraska in the title game 85-33. They have won 4 CITs all-time with the last coming in 1986. 

CUW WBB Overview

The Falcons have an overall record of 9-8 on the season with a 6-3 record within the NACC. Wisconsin scores 55.5 points per game on average, while allowing 56.6 points to their opponents. Aubrey DeBauch paces the team offensively with 13.1 ppg and 7.1 rpg. Erin Viergutz averages 11.8 ppg and 7.6 rpg as DeBauch and Viergutz lead the team in those two statistics. Jayden Ross and Liliana Guerra drop the most dimes for the Falcons, averaging 2.6 and 2.3 apg respectively. 

 

The Falcons dropped both games at CIT last season by scores of 100-49 to Nebraska and 67-55 to CUAA. They have won three tournaments All-Time with the last coming in 2007. 


MEN'S BASKETBALL

CUAA MBB Overview

The Cardinals are 6-12 on the season with a 4-10 record in the WHAC currently. Ann Arbor drops 75.2 points per game offensively and allows 77.2 points per game on defense. Four Cardinals average over double digits in points per game in Zavion McClendon (19.7), Dylan Jergens (16.6), Joey Garwood (12.9), and Devyn Jones (10.7). McClendon, Nate Brighton, and Jones all average over 6 rebounds per game while Mason Canfield and Jergens both have more than 3 assists per game. 

 

The first round for CUAA in last year's CIT featured a battle against Wisconsin, which saw the Cardinals fall by a score of 80-68. The Cardinals would then match up against the Cougars and would come out on top, 66-58. The Cardinals have won four CITs All-Time with their last coming in 2018 in Wisconsin. 

CUNE MBB Overview

The Bulldogs are 13-5 on the season with a 8-4 record in the GPAC. Nebraska scores 89.1 points per game and defensively allows 77.3 points on average. Three different Bulldogs average double digits points per game in Noah Schutte (20.4 ppg), Tristan Smith (18.1), and Bradley Bennett (10.6). Schutte and Smith are also the team leads in rebounds and assists per game with Schutte averaging 8.2 rpg and 3.1 apg and Smith averaging 8.9 rpg and 2.6 apg. 

 

The Bulldogs took home the CIT trophy last season after going through Chicago (89-70) and Wisconsin (82-64). They hold the most Championships on the Men's side with 29. 

CUC MBB Overview

The Cougars are 9-9 on the season with a 6-7 record in the NACC currently. Chicago averages 83.1 points per game, while allowing 80.8 points to their opponents on average. Jordan Matthews leads the charge offensively with 15.1 ppg, followed by Justin Greenlee with 14.1. Jacob Collicott is next with 11.8 ppg and leads the team with 6.8 rpg. Greenlee has the most assists per game with 3.7. 

 

The Cougars dropped both games last season as they lost to Nebraska, 89-70, and Ann Arbor, 66-58. They have won 14 CIT Championships with their last coming in 2011.

CUW MBB Overview

The Falcons enter CIT with an overall record of 7-10 and a NACC record of 7-5. Offensively the Falcons average 70.5 points per game while allowing opponents to score 75.6 points a game. CUW is led in scoring by Samuel Meerstein (14.0 points per game), Freeman Jackson (13.3 ppg), and Gabe Pruss (13.1 ppg). 

 

Last year at CIT, the Falcons picked up a first-round win against CUAA with an 80-68 victory, before falling to Nebraska in the championship game, 82-64. They have won four titles all time, with their last coming in 2019.


CHEER

As a non-NAIA competition, the scoring system was out of 90, compared to the typical 100 in NAIA scoring. 

CUAA Cheer Overview

The Cardinals have picked up a first-place finish in their sole meet this season at the Marian Invite. The Cardinals took home the top spot with a score of 83.17, which is the second-highest in the NAIA this season. 

 

The Cardinals edged out the Bulldogs in last year's CIT competition with a score of 79.12. Ann Arbor has won all four of the previous CIT cheer titles. 

CUNE Cheer Overview

Nebraska has competed at one competition so far this season as they had a duel with Hastings College last weekend that saw them come away with a score of 83.30, giving them the highest mark in the NAIA thus far. 

 

The Bulldogs finished as the CIT Runner-ups last season as they ended up with 79.04 points.

CUC Cheer Overview

This is the first competition of the season for the Cougars.

 

CUC finished last year's CIT in third with a score of 64.5.

CUW Cheer Overview

The CUW Cheer team competed at the UCA Nationals earlier this month as their only competition thus far this season. 

 

The team finished fourth at last year's CIT with a score of 45.5.


DANCE

As a non-NAIA competition, the scoring system was out of 70, compared to the typical 100 in NAIA scoring. 

CUAA Dance Overview

The Cardinal Dance team competed twice at the Marian Invite last weekend for their only two meets of the season so far. In the first competition, the Cardinals scored 65.9 points followed by 65.1 points in the second meet. They finished second in both competitions.

 

At last year's CIT the team finished third overall after scoring a 52.52. The team has a CIT title from when Ann Arbor hosted in 2019. 

CUNE Dance Overview

Nebraska has won the only event they have been a part of this season, taking first in a meet against Hastings and College of St. Mary's with a score of 82.0. 

 

The CUNE Dance team took home their first CIT title last year after putting up a score of 60.05.

CUC Dance Overview

This is the first event of the season for the Cougar Dance team. 

 

The Cougars finished the competition last season in second place after scoring 55.87 points. The team has not taken home a CIT title.

CUW Dance Overview

For the Falcons, this will be the first time the Dance team will hit the floor this season. 

 

CUW finished in fourth place at CIT last year with 47.75 points. The Falcons have won the CIT title twice.
