(Dearborn, MI) – The Cardinals men's hockey team headed to Dearborn to take on the 23rd-ranked University of Michigan-Dearborn Wolverines in the first game of this weekend's WHAC doubleheader. The Cardinals got off to a fast start, but eventually fell to the Wolverines by a score of 6-2.

Concordia started the contest at a record breaking pace, as Brandon Troyer took the puck off the game opening faceoff win by Tristan Waechter and ripped a shot from the blue line, beating the goalie to the top right and giving CUAA a 1-0 lead just 5 seconds into the match. The goal by Troyer was the fastest goal to be scored in a game in school history.

UM-Dearborn would bounce back, scoring a goal on the powerplay with 14:47 to go in the period to tie the contest. The period continued back and forth, as Dearborn would outshoot CUAA 12-5 across the entirety of the frame.

The second period contained more fast play, but the Wolverines would take advantage of their 12 shots on goal in the period, scoring three goals, including another one on the powerplay, during the 20 minutes of play. CUAA had an answer themselves, though, as Tyler Bieniek scored off a Brandon Troyer faceoff win to cut the lead to 4-2 with just 48 seconds left in the frame.

The Wolverines kicked off the third period quickly, scoring just a three and a half minutes into the final frame. They would continue to control play, outshooting Concordia 11-8 in the period as UM-Dearborn tacked on a final insurance goal and shut the Cardinals down the rest of the way to win, 6-2.

Elijah Gibbons started in net for the Cardinals, making 29 saves in the eventual defeat. The Wolverines outshot CUAA 35-23 across the entire 60 minutes.

The Cardinals will be back in action tomorrow night when they host the UM-Dearborn Wolverines in a rematch of tonight's contest. Puck drop is set for 7pm at the Arctic Coliseum in Chelsea, MI.
