SEASON PREVIEW: MEN’S HOCKEY LOOKS TO BUILD OFF WHAC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME RUN

(Ann Arbor, MI) – Concordia men's hockey has been preparing to begin the 2023-24 campaign. The Cardinals will look to build off a 19-16-3 record that saw the team make it to the finals of the WHAC tournament. CUAA returns 31 experienced players while adding 8 talented newcomers. Trevor Sattelmeier enters his first year as head coach after serving 4 years as an assistant.

 

2022-23 Season Review

Concordia went 19-16-3 last year with an 11-12-1 conference mark. The Cardinals earned a 5-4 win over #17 Grand Valley State and played #23 Purdue Northwest and #12 Lawrence Tech to shootouts. CUAA beat Aquinas and #7 Indiana Tech in the WHAC tournament, advancing to the final where they fell to #18 UM-Dearborn.

 

2023-24 Schedule Outlook

Concordia opens their season with a home series against Duquesne from September 22-23. The Cardinals finish the month with a 2-game series at John Carroll University.

In October, the team plays a home-and-home with UM-Dearborn to open WHAC conference play. The Cardinals face Lawrence Tech, Cleary, and Rochester in similar series to round out the month.

November sees the team face Indiana Tech and Aquinas in home-and-home matchups before the team takes a rest for Thanksgiving break. After a series against UM-Dearborn on December 1-2, the Cardinals will rest up until the new year.

In January, the Cardinals play a 2-game series against Lawrence Tech and Cleary before hosting Purdue Northwest for a non-conference clash. Home-and-homes against Rochester and Indiana Tech round out the month.

In February, the Cardinals play a series at Aquinas with Senior Day at home on February 3 at 5:00 pm. The team travels to Purdue Northwest and then hosts Alabama for a 2-game series on February 9-10.

 

Concordia Personnel

Seniors: Quinn Bieniek leads all returners with 20 goals and 15 assists last year. Kyle Hebner comes back after scoring 15 goals with 14 assists. Brandon Troyer returns after scoring 11 goals with 18 assists. Goalie Zackary Janis had 9 wins with a 3.11 GAA and .916 save percentage. Tyler Bieniek had 5 goals and 4 assists. Michael Brannan adds forward depth while Jarod Segal provides defensive depth.

Juniors: Carson Ediger notched 11 goals and 8 assists. Brayden Tayles had 2 goals along with 18 assists. Goalie Anthony Seykora had 9 wins with a 2.89 GAA and .914 save percentage. Derek Hebner had 3 goals and 7 assists on defense. Defenseman Brandon Kucera had a goal and 5 assists. Brendan Murray adds depth at forward while Zac Scacco contributes depth in goal.

Sophomores: Seth Francois recorded 14 goals and 13 assists. Zane Rydel had 9 goals and 16 assists last season. Bryce Iott notched 9 goals with 7 assists. Jackson Blough leads all returning defensemen with 6 goals along with 4 assists last year. Nicholas Twombley scored 4 goals along with 18 assists. Garrett Benoit scored 3 goals with 6 assists.

Sam Sahr picked up 3 goals with 5 assists. Bobby Lindsay recorded 4 assists on defense. Chase Temple had a goal and 3 assists. Nolan Foster picked up a win in goal last season. Nick Goldie saw action in 5 games. Ethan Lindle and McCarthy Clark competed in 4 games each. Gavin Scally and Jack Kallsen saw action in a game apiece last year. Kolten Horn adds depth at forward and Ethan Ryan gives depth in goal.

Newcomers: The Cardinals have added 8 newcomers: sophomore Michael Dickerson, freshmen Aidan Shannon, Braden Yurkunas, Colton Lebid-Pham, Connor Carroll, Luca Cottone, Marek Drennan, and Will Reed.

Head coach Trevor Sattelmeier is joined by assistant coach Tyler Groth. CJ Pobur will serve as the D2 head coach with Tristan Waechter and Liam Kenney as assistants.
