Cardinals downed by UM-Dearborn in WHAC opener

(Canton, MI) Concordia Men's Hockey returned home for their conference opener against the reigning WHAC Champions, UM-Dearborn. In a rematch of last year's championship game, the Wolverines came away victorious again, winning 3-0.

 

Zachary Janis played between the pipes for Concordia and recorded 46 saves. Seth Francois led the Cardinals with 5 shots on goal.

 

 

Six minutes into the first period, the Wolverines drew first blood with a shot from the blue line by Noah Szmagaj. Concordia had a power play opportunity later in the period, but were unable to convert and went into the first intermission down a goal.

 

UM-Dearborn added onto their lead with their first power play chance of the night, 15 minutes into the second period. Tyler Bieniek had a chance at an open net later in the period, but wasn't able to score, keeping the deficit at two going into the final period of play.

 

Concordia started the third period by killing a penalty, but then conceded their second power play of the goal to give the Wolverines a 3-0 advantage. Concordia had a pair of power play opportunities in the final four minutes, but failed to convert, keeping the final score at 3-0.

 

 

The Cardinals will hit the road for a 7:00 PM game at UM-Dearborn on Saturday, October 7th.
