Men's Hockey falls late to Saints on Senior Day

(Canton, MI) - The Concordia Cardinals played their final Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) game of the season as they will round out their schedule hosting Aquinas. The Cardinals were looking to avenge their shootout loss from the night before to the Saints.

The Cardinals entered the game with an overall record of 12-13-3 and 9-12-2 in WHAC games. The Saints entered at 16-14-1 and 11-8-1 in WHAC games.

FIRST PERIOD

Both teams got off their fair of shots in the first period as the Cardinals would have the 13-8 edge. With 5 minutes left in the period, the Cardinals would see their best opportunity to put a goal on the board, but the Saints goalkeeper would stop the multiple CUAA shots. Zachary Janis would also make a great save as he pinned the puck up against the post to stop a shot.

Neither team was able to record a goal in the first.

SECOND PERIOD

Once again we would see solid goalie play from both sides with Zachary Janis making 7 saves throughout the second period of play as opposed to the 6 from the Saints goalkeeper.

Nicholas Twombley led the team with 6 shots on goal following the second period. The score remained 0-0 with 20 minutes left to play.

THIRD PERIOD

The third period saw all of the action, scoring-wise with all four goals coming in the final 13 minutes of play. Tyler Bieniek recorded the first goal of the game as he received a pass from Carson Ediger and was able to beat the goal to the side of the net for the 1-0 lead.

Aquinas though would start to put the pressure on the Cardinals over the next 6 minutes with multiple shots. They were first able to get on the board with 3:51 left in the game. The Saints would put two more goals on Zachary Janis in the final 1:40 to take a firm 3-1 victory.

Zachary Janis would record 24 saves on the evening for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals will close out the regular season on Tuesday, February 6 when they travel to take on #11 Purdue Northwest.
