Baseball drops home opener against Goshen in 9th inning

(Ann Arbor, MI) - Concordia baseball held their home opener on a warm and breezy Tuesday afternoon with a 9-inning contest against Goshen. The leads shifted several times throughout the game, but a late 2-run homer lifted Goshen to a 6-5 win.

 

Mackenzie Martin started on the mound for the Cardinals. In the second inning Owen Johnson pitched with one strikeout. However, Goshen took a 2-0 lead after the second inning.

Kyle Winslow came in to pitch in the third inning, going 3 innings with 7 strikeouts. In the bottom half of the inning, Josh Burke got CUAA on the board with an RBI single scoring Tyler Lawson. Drew Fleming then tied the game with an RBI single to drive in Burke.

Tyler Lawson used a sacrifice bunt to score Aaron Garner in the fourth inning to put the Cardinals ahead. Goshen countered with 2 runs in the fifth to retake the lead. In the bottom half of the fifth, Drew Fleming tied the game with an RBI single scoring Josh Burke. Ryan Kotecki was able to slide home on a wild pitch to give the Cardinals a 5-4 lead.

Trey Acker, Kenneth (Dave) Rozmys, and Blake Weaver each pitched an inning from the sixth through eighth as Concordia maintained their lead.

Goshen pulled back ahead with a 2-run homer in the 9th inning. The Cardinals threatened with runners at second and third base in the bottom half, but the Maple Leafs secured the final strikeout to close the game.

 

Concordia will remain at home this Saturday to host rival Siena Heights for a doubleheader starting at 1pm.
