Baseball splits with Madonna to close out regular season

(Livonia, MI) - Concordia baseball traveled to Madonna University on Sunday afternoon to conclude their weekend series. The Cardinals fell 7-1 in the first contest but stormed back for a 14-4 victory in game two.

 

GAME 1 – MU 7, CUAA 1 (seven innings)

Kyle Winslow started the first contest on the mound, notching 3 strikeouts in 3.1 innings. The game remained scoreless until the fourth inning when Madonna scored 4 runs. Trey Acker finished the inning on the mound and pitched a total of 1.1 innings.

 

Madonna University tacked on 2 more runs in the fifth inning. Drew Murphy threw the final 1.1 innings of the game. The Crusaders added another run in the sixth inning.

 

Drew Fleming hit a solo home run in the seventh inning to break the shutout. However, Madonna would take the first contest.

 

GAME 2 – CUAA 14, MU 4 (seven innings)

Ethan Pollard was the starting pitcher for game two making 2 strikeouts in 3.2 innings. In the first inning Madonna scored first, but the Cardinals countered in the second inning when Aaron West used a sacrifice fly to score Aaron Garner.

 

The teams traded runs again with Justin Kozlowski using an RBI single to drive in Logan Hylek. Madonna reclaimed the lead with 2 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Blake Weaver finished the inning, throwing 1.1 innings with 1 strikeout.

 

The Cardinals erupted with 8 runs in the fifth inning to surge ahead. Drew Fleming crushed a 3 run homer to start things off. Aaron West drew a bases-loaded walk and Jake Kuhlman cleared the bases with a 3-RBI double. Curtis Townsend capped the inning with an RBI single to drive in Kuhlman.

 

In the sixth inning Tyler Lawson hit into a fielder's choice which scored Logan Hylek. Logan Fleming pitched the last two innings with 2 strikeouts. In the seventh inning Logan Hylek added a 2-RBI single. Tyler Wressel tacked on a sacrifice fly to score Drew Fleming.

 

The Cardinal defense closed out the seventh inning to secure the 14-4 win by the mercy rule.

 

 

Concordia baseball has now clinched the #2 seed for the upcoming WHAC tournament that begins May 1st.
