Football defeats Lawrence Tech 42-21

(Southfield, MI) – Concordia football traveled to Lawrence Tech on Saturday afternoon to continue their season.  The Cardinals came in 5-1 overall while the Blue Devils came in 6-2.  CUAA put together a complete game, scoring 6 touchdowns and forcing 3 turnovers, and the team emerged with a 42-21 win.

 

Gavin Brooks threw for 271 yards and 5 touchdowns in the contest.  Ameir Wilbourn led the team with 76 yards on 17 carries.  Donovan Johnson led the team with 97 receiving yards.  Nolan Smith hauled in 2 receiving touchdowns while Luke Wilson, Parker Graham and Seeger DeGayner each caught a touchdown apiece.

On defense, Hunter Maynard led the team with 6 tackles and an interception.  Gerald McHenry notched a fumble recovery while tying Casey Rauch and Marvitis Dupree with 5 tackles apiece.  Alonzo Johnson also added an interception in the game.

 

Concordia kicked off to Lawrence Tech to begin the game and the defense forced a three-and-out on the opening series.  Both teams traded defensive stops, but the Cardinals struck first with 4:27 remaining in the quarter.  Donovan Johnson hauled in a 25-yard pass to move into the redzone and Luke Wilson came in motion and caught a 6-yard touchdown pass.  CUAA led 7-0 after the 1st quarter.

On Concordia's first possession of the second quarter Gavin Brooks led a 15-play, 82-yard scoring drive that took 8:05 off the clock.  Parker Graham eventually hauled in an 11-yard touchdown over the middle to extend the Cardinals' lead.

Hunter Maynard made an interception on the next series and the team capitalized when Gavin Brooks lofted a pass over the defense to Nolan Smith for a 22-yard touchdown.  The Cardinal defense made another impact on the next possession when Gabe Whitmore forced a fumble which was recovered by Gerald McHenry.

Gavin Brooks led a 9-play, 73-yard drive on the ensuing series which was capped off by a 22-yard touchdown reception from Seeger DeGayner.  Lawrence Tech was able to break the shutout with a scoring drive before halftime, but CUAA led 28-7 heading to the locker room.

 

Both defenses exchanged stops to start the third quarter, but Concordia converted eventually when Ameir Wilbourn punched in a 22-yard rushing touchdown to add to their lead.  Alonzo Johnson came up with an interception on the next series to give the ball back to the offense.

Gavin Brooks steadily led a 9-play, 82-yard scoring drive to capitalize on the turnover.  On 3rd and goal Brooks rolled out to his right and lofted a 4-yard pass to Nolan Smith for his second touchdown catch of the day.

Lawrence Tech began to mount a comeback effort with two touchdowns in the 4th quarter to trim the Concordia lead to 42-21.  However, the Cardinal defense was able to hold strong to maintain the lead and claim the win.

 

Concordia will return home next Saturday, November 6 when they host Madonna.  Kickoff is at 1pm.
