SEASON PREVIEW: MEN’S BASKETBALL READY TO WORK IN 2023-24

(Ann Arbor, MI) – Concordia men's basketball is preparing to begin their 2023-24 campaign with their home opener this Saturday against Adrian. The Cardinals will look to improve on a 9-20 record last year and move higher up the WHAC standings. Head coach Ricky Yahn enters his 11th year at the helm of the program.

 

2022-23 Season Review

Concordia finished 9-20 overall last year with an 8-12 WHAC record. The Cardinals started WHAC play 3-0 and also swept Aquinas on the year. CUAA fell to Lourdes in the first round of the WHAC quarterfinals.

 

2023-24 Schedule Outlook

Concordia will host Adrian this Saturday at 6:00pm to open their season. The Cardinals will head on the road to face Spring Arbor and then open WHAC play at Lawrence Tech. CUAA hosts (RV) Rochester, travels to UNOH, and returns home to face UM-Dearborn and close the month.

In December, the Cardinals have three more home games in a row versus Cornerstone, Lambton, and Lawrence Tech. The team will play road contests at Lourdes and Holy Cross to close the calendar year.

January sees a 10-game slate starting with a road game at Madonna. The Cardinals host Cleary, travel to Aquinas, and then face #24 Indiana Tech and rival Siena Heights at home. The team goes to Rochester and then hosts UNOH. Concordia will travel to CUW for the Concordia Invitational Tournament on January 26-27, facing CUNE the first day. A home contest against (RV) Lourdes wraps up the month.

In February, the team has a 3-game road trip to Cornerstone, UM-Dearborn, and Cleary. Concordia hosts rival Madonna and then heads out to Indiana Tech and rival Siena Heights. A home contest against Aquinas wraps up the regular season.

 

Concordia Personnel

Seniors: Devyn Jones leads all returners with 5.8 RPG and 4.1 RPG last season. Nate Brighton returns after notching 5.2 PPG and 3.1 RPG. Matt Kohler had 2.0 PPG last year. Jack MacLeod had 0.8 RPG in 5 contests. Austin Poe adds depth at the guard spot.

Juniors: Evan Neff will be returning after missing last year due to injury. Hunter Yeakey provides depth to the team at the guard position.

Sophomores: Jason Jergens had 1.6 PPG last year. Mason Canfield notched 1.0 PPG. Ethan Young notched 1.6 PPG and 0.7 RPG.

Newcomers: The Cardinals have added 10 newcomers to this year's team: graduate transfer Dylan Jergens, junior transfers Ray Washington-Batle and Zavion McClendon, and freshmen Alexander Hauksson, Blake Liddell, Colby Chapman, Joey Garwood, Jason Williams, Mark DeVries, and Nyelle Shaheed.

Head coach Ricky Yahn is joined by assistant coaches Jake Fosdick and Zac Clark along with graduate assistant Vyshonn Munson.
