Men's Basketball falls in shootout at UNOH

(Lima, OH) – Concordia men's basketball traveled to UNOH for a WHAC contest before Thanksgiving break. The game featured multiple lead changes with the Cardinals on top at halftime, but the Racers used a late comeback to win 89-85.

Zavion McClendon led the team with 24 points. Devyn Jones' double-double was second with 16 points and a team-high 15 rebounds. Dylan Jergens was also in double figures with 13 points.

 

Nate Brighton made a 3-pointer to start the game. Dylan Jergens drove for a layup and Brighton added another triple. Devyn Jones and Jergens chipped in free throws and Joey Garwood hit a 3-pointer for a 15-9 lead. Zavion McClendon drove for a layup and made two free throws to get on the scoresheet. Devyn Jones converted an "and-1" for a 22-11 advantage.

Mason Canfield hit a triple and Mark DeVries scored inside to put the Cardinals up 27-15 just past the midway point. Canfield added another layup, but UNOH began to rally and took a 32-29 lead with 4:36 left to play. Joey Garwood and Zavion McClendon made free throws and Dylan Jergens hit a triple to tie the game. A drive from Devyn Jones gave CUAA a 41-39 lead at halftime.

 

Zavion McClendon drove for a layup to start the second half. Dylan Jergens knocked down a jumper and Devyn Jones score under the hoop. Nate Brighton scored and Jergens added two more baskets as the Cardinals continued to maintain a small lead. A bucket from Devyn Jones gave CUAA a 60-59 lead at the midway point.

Mark DeVries and Devyn Jones scored layups as the game stayed close. Zavion McClendon began to pace the offense with a pair of drives and a 3-pointer for a 74-71 lead. However, the Racers rallied to pull ahead in the final minutes.

Joey Garwood converted an "and-1" to trim the deficit to 81-80 with 1:24 left to play. The Racers were able to stay ahead and despite a running 3-pointer from Zavion McClendon with 5 seconds left, the Cardinals fell 89-85.

 

Concordia will return home on Wednesday, November 29 to host UM-Dearborn at 7:30pm.
