Men's Basketball upends Cornerstone, 86-75

(Ann Arbor, MI) - The Concordia Cardinals Men's Basketball team took on the Golden Eagles from Cornerstone on Saturday afternoon in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) match that saw the Cardinals come out on top with a 86-75 victory. 

 

The Cardinals came into the match with an even .500 record both overall and in WHAC action at 3-3 and 2-2 respectively. The Golden Eagles on the other hand came into the game at 4-3 overall and 1-2 in WHAC contests. 

 

FIRST-HALF

Cornerstone was able to jump out to a very early 7-0 lead through the first 2:14 of the game, but the Cardinals responded right back with seven points of their own with Devyn Jones making two free throws and Zavion McClendon adding a layup and a three-point bucket. The game would stay tightly contested throughout the first half as the teams would go back and forth with scoring buckets. McClendon would make back-to-back threes to give the Cards a slight 17-15 lead. This would start a 14-4 run for CUAA, with Joey Garwood ending the run with free throws. 

 

The Golden Eagles though took the lead at the 8:33 mark and would not lose the lead the rest of the half. The half ended with McClendon, Jones, and Nate Brighton each scoring a layup to bring the deficit down to three at the halfway point. 

 

FIRST-HALF LEADERS

Zavion McClendon was the team leader in points as he tallied 13, which was tied for the game-high at the break, not far behind him in that department was Devyn Jones who scored nine points. McClendon also led the team with five rebounds, while Mason Canfield led the team with three assists.

 

SECOND-HALF

Zavion McClendon opened the scoring in the second half with a three-point shot to tie the game at 40. Teams would trade baskets as neither team was able to grab a hold of the lead in the game. Nate Brighton and Joey Garwood hit back-to-back threes to once agin tie the game at 52 points apiece. After Devyn Jones tied the game at 65 with a layup, the Cardinals had a 13-2 scoring run, with points from Ray Washington-Battle, McClendon, Garwood, and Jones. The final 12 Cardinal points would come from the free throw line as they would end the day shooting 87.5% from the line. 

 

SECOND-HALF LEADERS

Zavion McClendon once again led the team by scoring 17 points with Joey Garwood grabbing 11 points. Devyn Jones came down with 10 rebounds to lead both teams in the second half. McClendon added four assists to his total as well.
