(Ann Arbor, MI) – Concordia men's basketball hosted Lawrence Tech on Saturday afternoon to continue WHAC conference play. The Cardinals kept the contest close throughout, but the Blue Devils pulled away for an 85-78 win.
Zavion McClendon led all scorers with 23 points. Joey Garwood was a close second with 21 points. Nate Brighton had a double-double with 14 points and a team-high 15 rebounds. Devyn Jones was in double figures with 10 points.
Joey Garwood had two layups to start the game. Devyn Jones knocked down a jumper and Mark DeVries converted a basket for a 9-9 tie. Jones hit another pair of jumpshots and DeVries scored inside to trim the team's deficit to 19-15.
Joey Garwood and Zavion McClendon nailed triples to keep the Cardinals close. Garwood added two free throws and McClendon had a basket and two free throws. Evan Neff scored inside late as CUAA trailed 35-31 at halftime.
Zavion McClendon had two free throws and a 3-pointer to start the second half. Nate Brighton gave the Cardinals a 39-38 lead with a triple and continued to pace the offense with two more baskets. Zavion McClendon added free throws and a triple and CUAA trailed 58-51 at the midway point of the half.
Mark DeVries scored inside and both Nate Brighton and Devyn Jones had two free throws. Jones hit a jumper and Joey Garwood made a layup and two triples to trim the deficit to 74-68.
Nate Brighton made a 3-pointer and Zavion McClendon finished off an "and-1". However, LTU continued to answer the Concordia baskets to stay ahead. Joey Garwood and Nate Brighton had late baskets but CUAA fell 85-78.
Concordia will travel to Lourdes next Saturday at 7pm.
