Men's Basketball downed by Rochester, 67-58

(Rochester, MI) – Concordia men's basketball traveled to Rochester on Saturday afternoon to continue WHAC conference play. The Cardinals jumped out to an early lead and led by 5 points at halftime, but the Warriors made a comeback and won 67-58.

Dylan Jergens led the team with 17 points. Matt Kohler came in second with 9 points. Joey Garwood, Nate Brighton, and Zavion McClendon tied for third with 8 points apiece. Mark DeVries had a team-high 6 rebounds.

 

Joey Garwood had a 3-pointer for Concordia's first basket. Devyn Jones and Nate Brighton nailed triples and free throws from Dylan Jergens gave the Cardinals an 11-1 lead. Dylan Jergens continued to score layups and Mark Devries finished off an "and-1" for an 18-12 advantage.

Joey Garwood and Dylan Jergens knocked down 3-pointers to keep Concordia ahead. Rochester pulled within a few points, but a triple from Jergens and free throws from Zavion McClendon gave the Cardinals a 29-24 lead at halftime.

 

Rochester opened the second half on a 9-0 run to take the lead. Dylan Jergens scored to end the run and Matt Kohler nailed a triple. Nate Brighton hit a 3-pointer and Zavion McClendon made free throws to keep the Cardinals close. Free throws from Devyn Jones tied the game 45-45 at the midway point.

Rochester countered with an 8-0 run, but Matt Kohler knocked down a 3-pointer to start a 7-0 run. Zavion McClendon and Joey Garwood added baskets to pull the Cardinals within one point down 53-52.

Dylan Jergens and Zavion McClendon made free throws as Concordia looked to make a comeback. Nate Brighton tipped in a basket in the final minutes, but Rochester was able to hold on defensively to secure the win.

 

Concordia will host UNOH this Wednesday at 7:30pm.
