Men's Basketball drops game against Concordia Nebraska at CIT

(Mequon, WI) - The Concordia Cardinals Men's Basketball team headed across the lake for the 71st annual Concordia Invitational Tournament (CIT). The Cardinals would take on the Concordia Nebraska Bulldogs in the first round of the tournament. 

 

The Cardinals entered the game with a 6-13 record, while the Bulldogs entered the tournament at 14-5. 

 

FIRST-HALF

Devyn Jones recorded the first 6 points for CUAA for a 6-3 lead. Dylan Jergens and Joey Garwood connected for back-to-back shots for an 11-3 lead. Nebraska clawed their way back to a 1-point game before Jones tallied another 5 points. Garwood added a couple of three-point buckets, with a couple of free throws over the next five minutes as well as Zavion McClendon

 

The teams would go back and forth throughout the final minutes as Nebraska would ultimately take a 37-31 lead into the half. 

 

FIRST-HALF LEADERS

Joey Garwood and Devyn Jones each scored 9 to lead CUAA in the first half. Jones also pulled down 3 rebounds while Dylan Jergens tallied 2 assists. 

 

SECOND-HALF

Nate Brighton opened the scoring for the Cards in the second half. Zavion McClendon, Dylan Jergens, and Devyn Jones would follow up with back-to-back-to-back layups. Jones, Jergens, and Garwood all added points to give CUAA a 5-point lead at the 13:34 mark. After CUNE took a 13-point lead with 3:20 remaining, McClendon and Garwood would hit back-to-back threes and then Garwood would tack on an "and-1". 

 

Nebraska would hit their foul shots down at the end of the game to walk away with the 5-point victory. 

 

GAME STAT LEADERS

Joey Garwood led all scorers with 21 points, while Devyn Jones and Nate Brighton each recorded 4 rebounds, and Jergens also tallied 4 assists throughout the game. 

 

UP NEXT

The Cardinals will play in the consolation game tomorrow afternoon with the game beginning at 3:30 PM EST. They will play the loser of Wisconsin/Chicago.
