WHAC CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW: Men's Lacrosse set to battle Indiana Tech in WHAC Championship game

(Ann Arbor, MI) - The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) tournament ends on Saturday afternoon with two teams vying for the Automatic bid into the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) National Invitational in mid-May. 

 

The top-seeded Cardinals enter the game after a 16-7 win over the fifth-seeded Michigan-Dearborn Wolverines on Thursday afternoon. Hunter McCarty led the offensive attack with four goals in the game with three other Cardinals scoring two goals apiece. Sam Bowling recorded 14 saves in net for CUAA. 

 

The second-seeded Indiana Tech Warriors, took down the #3-seeded Aquinas Saints by a score of 11-2. A pair of Warriors recorded hattricks in the game as they were led by Devin Macomber and Nate Langille. Kyle TwoBulls led the team in net with 12 saves on the day.

ABOUT THE WARRIORS

The Warriors finished runner-up in the regular season to the Cardinals dropping a pair of games to CUAA and Madonna to finish 6-2 in WHAC play, while owning a 8-6 overall record. Bryan Seaman is in his 8th season as head coach of the Warriors and has a 105-26 record at Indiana Tech and a 125-38 overall coaching record. 

 

A pair of Warriors have tallied over 40 goals on the season with Devin Macomber and Josh Bramley recording 47 and 45 goals respectively. Nate Langille who is third on the team in goals (32) leads the team in assists with 35 and points with 67. Devin Macomber has tallied the second most points with 66. A pair of faceoff specialists will hit the field with Tristan McKneely leading the pair going 105-173, while Zach Spisz has won 57 of his 147 attempts. 

 

Kyle Twobulls has played over 95% of the team's minutes in goal with 790 on the season. He allows 12.53 goals against per game while making 155 saves and owning a save percentage of 48.4%.

 


ABOUT THE CARDINALS

The Cardinals took home their second-straight WHAC Regular Season title after an 8-0 conference record and a 12-3 overall record. Head Coach Ty McGuire is in sixth season with a 45-30 record. 

 

The offensive attack for CUAA sees four players with at least 30 goals, as Cooper Regimbal (34), Hunter McCarty (34), Andrew Simmons (33), and Ivan Progar (32) lead the pack. McCarty has also recorded a team-high 20 assists with Travis Wright tallying 17. Sam Saje is the Cardinal's leading faceoff specialist winning 207 of his 287 attempts and has picked up a team-high 155 ground balls. 

 

Sam Bowling has been the man in net for 14 of the Cardinal's 15 games, playing 777:19 minutes. Bowling has accumulated 140 saves and leads the WHAC with a 7.95 goals-against average. He also has a save percentage of 57.6%.

 


PREVIOUS MATCHUP

The Warriors lead the all-time series history 7-2, although the Cardinals have won the past two regular-season meetings. The Warrior's win last year against the Cardinals in the WHAC Championship game gave IIT the auto bid into the NAIA Invitational. 

 

The matchup earlier this season, which was CUAA's first win against Indiana Tech at home, saw the Cardinals come out on top 11-10 in the game. The Cardinal's six goals in the second period were the big difference in the win. Andrew Simmons and Cooper Regimbal each recorded a hattrick in that game, with Sam Bowling saving 10 shots.
