Softball splits games with Ave Maria and Keiser on Tuesday

(Melbourne, FL) - The Concordia Cardinals softball team was back at it on Tuesday afternoon with a pair of games against two native Florida teams. The Cardinals would take on Ave Maria in the 12:15 game, followed by Keiser at 2:30. CUAA looked to continue their hot play on the spring break trip as they are now 5-2 over the past three days. 

 

CUAA comes into the day with a 13-3 overall record, while the Gyrenes (Ave Maria) were 19-6 and the Seahawks (Keiser) at 14-4. 

 

GAME 1 - CONCORDIA 8, AVE MARIA 3

Emilee Underwood earned the start in the circle for the first game of the day against Ave Maria. Underwood (7-0) recorded five strikeouts over six innings of work. She allowed three runs on five hits and a walk. 

 

Concordia plated runs in the first four innings to make it a 5-0 game. The runs would come from Katie Tobias with two singles, Madison Poe's single, Elyse Brittain's double, and a Cassidy Kane RBI groundout. 

 

The Gyrenese put two runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run double. The sixth inning saw Shanon McAlinden with a two-run double and a Tobias sacrifice fly. The final run of the game came on the Ave Maria side with an infield single. 

 

Paige Anderson pitched the bottom of the seventh inning allowing only a sole hit. 

 

GAME 2 - KEISER 12, CONCORDIA 6

Five pitchers combined to pitch the seven innings for the Cardinals with Paige Anderson earning the start. Anderson pitched 1.1 innings allowing six runs (three earned) on four hits and two strikeouts. Hannah Duchene (0-1) was the pitcher of record in the second game, going 1.2 innings allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and two strikeouts. 

 

The Seahawks recorded the first six runs in the game, tallying three in the first two innings. The Cardinals were able to get on the board with two in the third when Katie Tobias had an RBI groundout. While Madison Poe induced a run down going to second that allowed Elyse Brittain to score. 

 

The game became tied in the fourth with the Cardinals plating four runs. With the bases loaded, Payton Lewis reached on a fielder's choice to score Elliana Gaines. Jada Stephenson then reached safely on a fielder's choice on her own as all the runners were safe to score Brooklin Cox. Katie Tobias laced a single to right field that caused a throwing error to score two runs for a 6-6 game. 

 

The Seahawks though were able to plate six more runs throughout the final innings to come away with the 12-6 win. 

 

The final three pitchers for the last three innings of work were Emilee Underwood, Amber Lamphier, and Cassidy Kane. Underwood tallied seven outs allowing three runs (all unearned) on two hits with two strikeouts. Lamphier was not able to record an out in the seventh inning, before Kane got the final two outs of the inning, allowing one hit. 

 

TOP PERFORMERS

Elyse Brittain and Payton Lewis each grabbed four hits on the afternoon. Leading the RBI department was Katie Tobias with five. Shannon McAlinden led the extra base hit department with three doubles. 

 

Emilee Underwood led the day striking out a total of seven batters throughout her two appearances.

The Cardinals have a well-deserved day off tomorrow before they have another trio of games against St. Thomas, #14 Indiana Wesleyan, and Trinity Christian with the first two back-to-back at 10 AM and 12:15 PM, followed by Trinity Christian at 4:45 PM.
