(Ann Arbor, MI) – Concordia women's basketball kicked off their season with a home contest against Spring Arbor on Thursday night. The Cardinals looked to feed off the energy of their home fans to pick up a win. CUAA allowed their fewest points in a game since 2018 with a solid defensive effort, securing a 70-37 victory.
Alize Tripp scored a career-high 20 points in the contest. Taylor Leatherman had a team and career high 9 rebounds in her first career start and tied Julia Hirt for second place with 9 points apiece. Asaria Turman and Samantha Dorn each finished with 8 points.
Alize Tripp drained a 3-pointer for Concordia's first basket of the game. Tripp added a jumper and Julia Hirt knocked down an early triple for an 8-5 lead. Keirslynn Lawless made a driving layup and later added an offensive putback as both teams traded baskets. Mackenzie Howe checked into the game and scored with a solid inside move. Two free throws from Taylor Leatherman put CUAA up 17-11 after the 2nd quarter.
Samantha Dorn knocked down a triple for Concordia's first 2nd-quarter basket. Asaria Turman began to establish herself inside with a pair of baskets in the post. Alize Tripp drained another 3-pointer and Turman continued to score in the paint with two more layups. The Cardinals led 31-22 heading to the locker room.
Alize Tripp started a 16-2 run in the 3rd quarter with a triple after Taylor Leatherman made an assist from the paint. Leatherman and Tripp added driving layups, Mackenie Howe scored inside, and Samantha Dorn drained a step-back 3-pointer. Zaria Mitchner drove baseline for a layup and Julia Hirt added a layup late in the quarter. CUAA held a 53-27 advantage after the 3rd.
Alize Tripp made a layup, a 3-pointer and a mid-range jumper to continue her career night in the 4th quarter. Julia Hirt knocked down a triple and Keirslynn Lawless made a strong drive for a basket. Ellie Kallner converted a 3-pointer in the final minutes and the Cardinals continued to play solid defense. CUAA claimed the 70-37 victory as time expired.
Concordia will remain at home when they host Indiana South-Bend this Saturday, October 30. Tip-off is set for 5:30pm.
