Women's Basketball falls in Close Contest Against Midway

(Ann Arbor, MI) – Concordia women's basketball played their first game of the 2022 calendar year with a matchup against Midway.  The Cardinals continued a tough stretch of non-conference opponents as they looked to pick up another win.  The game was tightly contested and featured multiple large scoring runs and lead changes, but Midway held on for an 88-84 win.

Alize Tripp led Concordia with 22 points on the day.  Samantha Dorn posted her first career double-double with 16 points and a team-high 11 rebounds.  Ellie Kallner finished with a career high 13 points, shooting 4-5 from behind the arc.  Keirslynn Lawless was also in double figures with marking her season high 10 points.

Keirslynn Lawless had a layup for Concordia's first basket of the game.  Julia Hirt had two early free throws, but Midway jumped out to a 12-4 lead at the 6:00 mark.  Alize Tripp converted an old-fashioned three-point play and added a jumper as the Cardinals looked to fight back.  A 3-pointer from Izzy Viau started a 16-0 run with Keirslynn Lawless tying the game and Samantha Dorn hitting the go-ahead layup.  Two late steals and layups from Alize Tripp capped the run and CUAA led 25-14 after the first quarter.

Midway responded with an 11-0 run to start the second quarter to tie the game.  Samantha Dorn countered with a triple but the Eagles would briefly retake the lead 30-28.  Keirslynn Lawless had two free throws and Alize Tripp drained a 3-pointer as the teams traded baskets.  Julia Hirt scored a layup and completed an "and-1" late in the quarter, but CUAA trailed 45-42 at halftime.

Midway took a 50-42 lead early in the third quarter, but a Samantha Dorn triple began a 15-0 CUAA run to again reclaim the lead.  Alize Tripp, Ellie Kallner and Izzy Viau all knocked down 3-pointers during the run.  Kallner remained hot with three more triples in the quarter and Samantha Dorn drained another 3-pointer as well.  CUAA led 69-63 after the third quarter.

Asaria Turman had a pair of layups early in the fourth quarter for the Cardinals.  However, a 10-0 run by Midway put the Eagles back ahead 76-74 with 5:33 to play.  Keirslynn Lawless knotted the game with an offensive putback and later added two free throws for a 78-78 tie.  Midway answered with a 6-0 run and the Eagles were able to make their free throws down the stretch.  Despite several late layups from Asaria Turman, CUAA fell by a final score of 88-84.

Concordia will now resume WHAC play when the Rochester Warriors come to town for a 3pm tipoff on Saturday January 8.
