(Lima, OH) – Concordia women's basketball traveled to UNOH on Monday night to continue WHAC conference play. The Cardinals came in 9-9 overall (6-4 WHAC) while the Racers entered 3-9 (1-7 WHAC). CUAA started strong and held off a late UNOH comeback attempt in a 58-54 win.
Julia Hirt led the team with 15 points. Alize Tripp came in second with 12 points. Izzy Viau finished third with 9 points. Asaria Turman had a team-high 7 rebounds along with 6 points.
Alize Tripp opened scoring with a layup. Keirslynn Lawless and Asaria Turman converted early baskets in the paint as well. A jumper from Taylor Leatherman and a triple from Julia Hirt kept the Cardinals out in front. Alize Tripp converted an old-fashioned three-point play and Hirt added two free throws. A late 3-pointer from Tripp put CUAA ahead 20-11 after the first quarter.
Julia Hirt started a 10-0 run with a free throw in the second quarter. Hirt added a layup after a cut to the basket and Samantha Dorn drained a pair of free throws. Izzy Viau knocked down a 3-pointer and Mackenzie Howe capped the run with an inside basket. CUAA held a 30-16 lead heading into halftime.
Izzy Viau had Concordia's first third-quarter basket with a layup. Asaria Turman converted a pair of layups inside and Julia Hirt banked in a 3-pointer. Hirt added a reverse layup and Ellie Kallner also scored a basket. CUAA led 43-31 after the third quarter.
Samantha Dorn drilled a triple for the Cardinals' first fourth-quarter basket. Izzy Viau scored inside off a quick feed from Asaria Turman and Dorn drained another 3-pointer. However, UNOH began to mount a comeback effort in the final minutes narrowing Concordia's lead to single digits. While the Racers got as close as 4 points with 3.5 seconds to play, CUAA held on to claim the 58-54 victory.
Concordia will return home this Wednesday, January 19 to host Lawrence Tech at 6pm.
