Women's Basketball Outlasts Lawrence Tech 60-49 in WHAC Quarterfinals

(Ann Arbor, MI) – Concordia women's basketball hosted a WHAC Tournament quarterfinal matchup on Tuesday night against Lawrence Tech.  The Cardinals entered as the #4 seed while the Blue Devils came in as the #5 seed.  CUAA weathered several runs by Lawrence Tech to emerge with the 60-49 win and advance to the next round.  The victory gives the Cardinals 19 wins on the year, the most in the Kiefer Haffey era.

Samantha Dorn led the Cardinals with a career-high 20 points.  Taylor Leatherman finished second with 16 points.  Alize Tripp finished third with 10 points.  Dorn and Tripp tied for a team-high 5 rebounds.

 

Taylor Leatherman opened the scoring with a jump shot.  Asaria Turman scored inside and Zaria Mitchner added a free throw.  Samantha Dorn drilled a triple and Mitchner added a layup, prompting an LTU timeout with Concordia up 10-4.  Taylor Leatherman added another layup in the quarter and CUAA led 13-5 after the first.

Taylor Leatherman scored to open the second quarter.  Samantha Dorn knocked down a 3-pointer and Julia Hirt drew contact to complete an "and-1".  Hirt added two more free throws and the Cardinals continued to hold onto a double-digit lead through most of the quarter.  Taylor Leatherman drained a wide-open 3-pointer and CUAA led 26-16 at halftime.

 

Samantha Dorn converted an old-fashioned three-point play to start the third quarter.  Keirslynn Lawless scored inside and Dorn drove for a layup.  Taylor Leatherman made a layup and Alize Tripp blew by the defense for her first basket of the game.  CUAA held a 38-32 lead after the third quarter.

Taylor Leatherman finished off an "and-1" to start the fourth quarter.  Alize Tripp scored and Samantha Dorn drained two free throws, but a 7-0 LTU run trimmed the lead to 46-43 with 2:33 left to play.  The game slowed down in the final minutes as the Blue Devils fouled to stop the clock.  Critical free throws from Samantha Dorn, Alize Tripp and Taylor Leatherman secured the 60-49 win as time expired.

 

Concordia will now head on the road to face #1 seed Indiana Tech this Friday, February 25.
