WHAC Preview: Cardinals head to top-seeded Indiana Tech for WHAC Semifinals

(Ann Arbor, MI) – The Concordia Cardinals women's basketball team won their first-round game against Lawrence Tech on Tuesday evening by a score of 60-49 and are moving onto the semifinal round. This Friday night the Cardinals will go up against #1 Indiana Tech for a chance to move onto the WHAC Championship game for the second consecutive season.

About the Warriors

The Warriors finished the regular season with a 27-2 regular-season record and a 19-1 record in the WHAC. Indiana Tech has been ranked in every NAIA poll this season as they are currently ranked 17th in the latest poll. The two blemishes on the Warrior's record are losses against Lawrence Tech and Rio Grande. 

 

IIT is coming off of a dominating 66-26 quarterfinal win against Madonna on Tuesday evening. The Warriors had four players tally double-digit points as they were led by Emma Tuominen with 16 points and Kyra Whitaker with 13 points. As a team, Indiana Tech shot 46.4% from the floor as they were 26-56 as a team. 

 

Throughout the season, they have been led by Tuominen and Whitaker who have averaged 14.6 and 12.8 points per game. Erika Foy and Taya Andrews also lead the Warriors with 11.6 and 10.8 points a game. 

 

The rebounding category is led by Foy and Tuominen as they are bringing down 8.1 and 7.6 rebounds a game. The passing game is headlined by Andrew and Whitaker as they are getting 3.2 and 3.0 assists per game. 

 

The Warriors Head Coach is Jessie Biggs who is in her 10th season as she has compiled a 237-87 record. 

 

About the Cardinals

The Cardinals advanced to the Semifinal round following the 60-49 win on Tuesday evening over Lawrence Tech. CUAA was able to hold off a late LTU comeback as Samantha Dorn poured in a career-high 20 points and Taylor Leatherman added 16. The Cards as a team shot 83.3% from the free-throw line as they were 25-30 from the line as a team. 

 

Alize Tripp comes into the game leading the Cards in scoring at 13.6 points a game, followed by Taylor Leatherman and Samantha Dorn who average 9.1 and 8.5 points respectively. 

 

Leading the passing effort are Tripp and Leatherman who are totaling 3.0 and 1.8 assists per game. Leatherman also leads the rebounding effort with Keirslynn Lawless right behind her as they average 5.2 and 4.9 rebounds per game. 

 

Keifer Haffey leads the team out who is now in his fourth season and has a 63-57 career record.

The Warriors have taken both of the games this past season winning the first game back on November 13, 70-53, and on January 15, 74-63.

 

The first game in Ann Arbor saw the Warriors Tuominen lead the game with 23 points and nine rebounds. Dorn and Tripp for the Cardinals each tallied 14 points, while Stephanie Abraham recorded six rebounds. 

 

Fort Wayne saw the second game at an 11-point difference as Tuominen once again led the game with 22 points and Foy with 12 rebounds. The Cardinal's effort saw Asaria Turman tally 19 points, while Keirslynn Lawless tacked on six rebounds.
