(Grand Rapids, MI) – Concordia women's basketball traveled to Aquinas on Wednesday night for a WHAC match. After a 23-23 tie at halftime, the Cardinals outscored the Saints by 14 points in the second half for a 53-39 win.
Samantha Dorn led the team with 17 points. Taylor Leatherman finished a close second with 16 points and a team-high 9 rebounds.
Samantha Dorn started a 7-0 opening run with a 3-pointer. The Cardinals continued to attack the Aquinas zone with baskets from Taylor Leatherman and Dorn. The Saints countered with a 5-0 run, but Samantha Dorn continued pacing the offense with a putback, a triple, and two free throws. CUAA led 14-10 after the 1st.
Samantha Dorn opened the second quarter with two free throws. Taylor Leatherman drove for a pair of baskets as well, but Aquinas battled back to take a 23-20 lead. A deep 3-pointer from Leatherman tied the contest 23-23 heading to halftime.
Julia Hirt scored down low early in the 3rd. Emily McCalla started a 15-0 run with a floater and Taylor Leatherman made a go-ahead layup. Izzy Viau drove through the defense to score and the Cardinals got triples from Julia Hirt, Izzy Hadley and Samantha Dorn. CUAA led 40-30 after the 3rd.
Ellie Kallner continued the 3-point onslaught to start the 4th. Izzy Viau and Taylor Leatherman drove for baskets with Leatherman adding a triple. The Cardinals stayed strong defensively and Zaria Mitchner scored with just over a minute to play. CUAA claimed the 53-39 win as time expired.
Concordia will play their next game on Saturday, December 17 against Life University at 1pm.
