SEASON PREVIEW: WOMEN’S BASKETBALL READY TO HIT THE COURT IN 2023

(Ann Arbor, MI) – Concordia women's basketball has been hard at work preparing to begin their 2023-24 campaign. The Cardinals will look to improve upon a 17-12 record last year which saw the team earn the #4 seed in the WHAC playoffs. Head coach Elyse Schlump enters her 2nd year at the helm, returning 13 key players while adding 9 talented newcomers.

 

2022-23 Season Review

Concordia finished 17-12 overall with a 13-7 WHAC record last year. The Cardinals earned the #4 seed in the WHAC with their performance, picking up a thrilling 76-73 overtime win over rival Siena Heights. CUAA hosted Cornerstone in a WHAC quarterfinal, falling 78-76 in a tightly contested game.

 

2023-24 Schedule Outlook

Concordia opens the new season October 27-28 at the Saint Francis Tournament, facing Goshen and the host Saint Francis (IN).

The Cardinals' home opener will be against Mount Vernon Nazarene on November 1 at 5:30pm. WHAC conference play starts against Lawrence Tech followed by a key exhibition matchup at NCAA Division I Central Michigan. Concordia will host Rochester, travel to UNOH, and return home to face UM-Dearborn to close out the month.

In December, the Cardinals will host Cornerstone and Lawrence Tech. The team travels to Lourdes, rests up for Christmas break, and then plays host to Marian on December 30.

January sees a total of 10 games, starting with a road match at Madonna. Concordia hosts Cleary, travels to Aquinas, and then returns home to face Indiana Tech and rival Siena Heights. The Cardinals play at Rochester and then host UNOH. From January 26-27 the team will compete at CIT which will be held at Concordia-Wisconsin this year. The Cardinals host Lourdes on January 31 to end a busy month.

In February, the team begins a 3-game road trip at Cornerstone, UM-Dearborn, and Cleary. The Cardinals host rival Madonna before traveling to Indiana Tech and rival Siena Heights. A home tilt against Aquinas on February 24 concludes the regular season.

 

Concordia Personnel

Seniors: Taylor Leatherman returns after a team-leading 14.6 PPG and 8.6 RPG last year. Izzy Viau notched 5.2 PPG and 2.8 RPG. Keirslynn Lawless had 3.6 PPG and 4.4 RPG. Mckenzie Maciejewski had 1.0 PPG and 0.6 RPG. Angelina Haisha adds depth as a guard.

Juniors: Julia Hirt recorded 8.9 PPG and 3.5 RPG. Emily McCalla had 3.3 PPG and 2.3 RPG. Ellie Kallner notched 3.0 PPG and 3.4 RPG.

Sophomores: Izzy Hadley recorded 3.3 PPG and 1.5 RPG. Braylynn Haines, Chloe Bisballe and Jess Andrew provided a spark off the bench with points and rebounds. Kendall Harmon adds depth as a guard.

Newcomers: The Cardinals have added 9 newcomers: junior transfers Abby Long, Brooke Brauher and Hannah Vallier, and freshmen Abby Pasinos, Alexx Braddock, Ellery Baker, Fran Denardo, Julia Viau, and Maren McCallister.

 

Head coach Elyse Schlump is joined by assistant coaches Erica Yost and Eric Salsbury, graduate assistant Brandon Wade, and student assistant Grace Sandlin.
