Women's Basketball rounds out CIT with win over Concordia Chicago

(Mequon, WI) - The Concordia Cardinals Women's Basketball team played their second game of the Concordia Invitational Tournament on Saturday afternoon as the Cardinals looked to pick up a win, for a third-place finish. The Cardinals would take on Concordia Chicago in the consolation match. 

 

Ann Arbor would come into this game with an overall record of 13-6, while the Cougars entered the game with a 5-13 record. 

 

FIRST QUARTER

The Cardinals scored the first 9 points of the game as Braddock recorded 4 points and Leatherman 5. Three more Cardinals joined the scoring as Abby Long, Jess Andrew, and Ellery Baker all recorded buckets. A second Abby Long 3-pointer would give CUAA a 22-5 lead with 3 minutes remaining. 

 

Leatherman and Braddock closed out the quarter with a basket each for a 26-5 lead. 

 

SECOND QUARTER

Emily McCalla scored the first four points of the quarter for the Cardinals before McKenzie Maciejewski tallied a 3-pointer. Braddock would then complete an "and-1" for the 36-6 lead and then Jess Andrew would tack on a corner 3. Ellie Kallner added in a 3 of her own before Braylyn Haines scored the final point of the half on a free throw. 

 

FIRST HALF LEADERS

Leatherman led the Cardinals with 10 points at the halfway point, while also pulling down a team-high 5 rebounds. Abby Long and Leatherman have each recorded 3 assists as well to lead the team. 

 

THIRD QUARTER

Abby Long opened the 3rd Quarter scoring for the Cardinals just a minute into the period. Only five points would be scored over the next 5 minutes, with all coming from the Cougars. Taylor Leatherman stopped the drought with a layup followed by back-to-back 3-pointers from Ellie Kallner and Julia Hirt. The scoring in the quarter would be ended by McKenzie Maciejewski with a 3. 

 

The Cardinals led 60-22 after the third. 

 

FOURTH QUARTER

CUAA grabbed the first 6 points of the final period with 4 from Ellery Baker and 2 from Chloe Bisballe. Angelina Haisha would add in a bucket as well with Maren McCallister scoring three times. Haisha added another 3-pointer for the 11th of the game. Izzy Hadley closed up the scoring for CUAA on the day.  

 

FINAL STAT LEADERS

Taylor Leatherman led the team in points on the afternoon with 15 points. She also led the team in rebounds with 6 and tied Abby Long in assists with 4. 

 

UP NEXT

CUAA will head back home as they will go back into conference play against Lourdes University on Wednesday, January 31, with a 5:30 PM tipoff.
