Women's Basketball Overpowers Lourdes in WHAC Quarterfinals

(Ann Arbor, MI) - Concordia women's basketball hosted Lourdes on a Wednesday night to begin the WHAC conference tournament. The Cardinals fed off the energy of their many fans and cruised to a 79-56 win.

Abby Long led the team with 19 points. Jess Andrew finished a close second with 16 points. Ellie Kallner (12) and Taylor Leatherman (11) were also in double figures. Leatherman added a team-high 7 rebounds.

Abby Long had the first Cardinal basket with a triple. Long added another basket, and Taylor Leatherman and Ellie Kallner chipped in jump shots. Abby Long continued to score and Jess Andrew nailed a 3-pointer along with a layup. Emily McCalla scored inside and Taylor Leatherman knocked down a triple. Abby Long made a layup off a slick behind-the-back pass from Ellery Baker and hit a triple at the buzzer for a 30-19 CUAA lead.

Julia Hirt opened scoring in the second quarter with an offensive putback. Abby Long drained another triple in a quarter which saw the Cardinals outscore the Grey Wolves 19-4. Taylor Leatherman hit a jump shot, and Julia Hirt and Jess Andrew scored on drives to the basket. Andrew continued to help the offense with a 3-pointer and another layup. CUAA held a commanding 49-23 lead at halftime.

 

Taylor Leatherman drained a pair of free throws early in the third quarter. Ellie Kallner knocked down a triple and Julia Hirt made free throws. Jess Andrew drove for a layup, and Emily McCalla and Kallner added free throws. Mckenzie Maciejewski made an impact late in the quarter with a jumper and a 3-pointer. CUAA led 75-40 after the third quarter.

The Cardinals emptied their bench in the fourth quarter allowing many of their reserves some key time on the court. Later in the quarter, Ellie Kallner nailed a 3-pointer and Ellery Baker made a free throw. CUAA claimed the 79-56 win as time expired.

 

 

Concordia will travel to #2 seed Siena Heights this Friday.
